After a thrilling extra innings win on Friday night, the Staten Island Yankees (37-36) had the tables turned on them, losing to the Vermont Lake Monsters (33-41) in 11 innings, 5-3.
Staten Island got on the board first in the third inning. Isaias Tejeda doubled to left field, followed by back-to-back singles by Vicente Conde and Collin Slaybaugh to load the bases. Billy Fleming drove home the first two runs of the ball game with a single to center field for his first RBI as a Staten Island Yankee.
Vermont answered right back in the top of the fourth inning. J. P. Sportman reached on an error by Conde at shortstop and later scored on a Max Kuhn single to center field to make the score 2-1 in favor of Staten Island.
The Lake Monsters took the lead in the top of sixth inning. Sportman reached base again with a single to left field, followed by a Jose Brizuela single to center. Kuhn then brought home Sportman with a groundout to third to tie the game. Vermont would go ahead as John Nogowski hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, plating Brizuela.
Down by a run, Staten Island came roaring back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Fleming came up with another hit on a single to center, followed by a Connor Spencer single to the same spot. Jose Javier came into the game to pinch run for Fleming and it paid off immediately as Ty McFarland singled to right field to tie the game at three runs apiece.
With the game tied, the Baby Bombers went into extra innings for the fourth time in the last week. Vermont took control of the game in the eleventh inning as Sportman reached base once again on a walk from Andury Acevedo (L, 3-3). Brizuela then singled to right field followed by a ground out by Kuhn to second base to bring in the go-ahead run. Vermont added another run for insurance as Nogowski doubled right field to make the score 5-3.
With Saturday's loss, the Baby Bombers are officially eliminated from the playoff race. Staten Island travels to Brooklyn on Sunday to try and spoil the Cyclones' playoff hopes. The Yankees return to Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Monday for a Labor Day/Pregnant Ladies Night.
