Cox's clout twice beats former team

Morey strikes out season-high eight in his second Triple-A start
August 31, 2014

Zack Cox snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI triple and later added a run-scoring single, and Robert Morey struck out a season-high eight batters in six scoreless innings as the New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Memphis Redbirds, 4-1 on Sunday night.

Cox, the former Cardinals first-round pick who earlier in the day hit an eighth-inning home run to lift the Z's to a 5-4 victory in the completion of Saturday's suspended game, drilled his third triple of the year off the wall in right-center field, cashing in a one-out single by Kyle Jensen.

Neither team mounted a serious scoring threat through the first four innings, as the Redbirds and Zephyrs each had one hit and 11 combined strikeouts.

Memphis starter Boone Whiting recorded six strikeouts through the first three frames, including four in a row at one point. New Orleans did not get its first baserunner until Derek Dietrich's one-out double in the fourth, but Dietrich was tagged out when he attempted to advance on Mark Canha's grounder to third, and Justin Bour bounced out to end the inning.

Morey was just as impressive, allowing only a pair of singles to Mike O'Neill through the first five innings. Morey got help from catcher Kyle Skipworth, who threw out O'Neill attempting to steal second base in the fifth, one inning after he nabbed Xavier Scruggs on the heels of a one-out walk.

Morey (1-1) gave up a leadoff single to Rafael Ortega in the sixth, and two outs later Scruggs roped a single past Cox at third to put the tying run in scoring position, but Morey fanned Greg Garcia for his eighth strikeout, his highest total in a game since June 30, 2012 with Class A Jupiter.

The Zephyrs added three insurance runs in their half of the sixth to force Whiting from the game. Dietrich led off with a double and scored one out later on a single by Justin Bour.

Jensen then drove in Bour with a single to left, giving him 92 runs batted in, second-most in the Pacific Coast League, and Cox delivered a single to right to boost the lead to 4-0.

Whiting (4-7) was charged with four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. He struck out seven without a walk.

Rett Varner came out of the Zephyrs bullpen in the seventh and served up a home run to Audry Perez before recording the final three outs.

The Z's conclude the 2014 season on Monday at 1 p.m. with $1 hot dogs and sodas and two free tickets for military personnel.
