Reynolds steps up in 10th for Scorpions

Mets prospect smacks two-run homer to cap three-hit afternoon
October 11, 2014

Matt Reynolds hasn't had an easy time settling in to the Arizona Fall League, but he put that behind him on Saturday aftternoon.

"I felt good. I'm still working on a lot of things. I'm still trying to get comfortable again at the plate. I felt bad the first two or three games," the Mets' 20th-ranked prospect said. "But I think I'm starting to turn the corner."

Reynolds slugged a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th inning to cap a three-hit day and give Scottsdale a 7-5 win over Surprise.

The 23-year-old shortstop was 1-for-9 in his first four games for the Scorpions and admitted that getting back into a groove after more than a month off has been a challenge.

"It's extremely difficult, especially after going six months seeing live pitching almost every day," he said, "then to take a month off, just taking BP and hitting off a tee and getting thrown in with every single guy throwing in the low- to mid-90s with good off-speed stuff."

Reynolds, who split the season between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas, singled in the second and came home on a dinger by Yankees prospect Kyle Higashioka, who also went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Reynolds struck out in the fourth and flied out in the seventh, but with the game tied, 5-5, in the eighth, he socked a one-out double off Red Sox prospect Robby Scott that moved Yankees prospect Dante Bichette Jr. to third. Both runners were stranded, however, as Scott got Higashioka to bounce out and fanned Daniel Carbonell (Giants).

The game was still tied with two outs in the 10th and Yankees No. 11 prospect Greg Bird on first base when Reynolds sent an 0-2 pitch from Reds right-hander Ben Klimesh over the left-field fence.

"He started me off with a fastball. I just wanted to see what he had," said the University of Arkansas product. "The next pitch was a sharp breaking ball on the outside corner. Then he made a mistake -- he hung a breaking ball and I put a good swing on it."

Reynolds also chipped in defensively, nailing Nick Williams with a relay throw in the bottom of the 10th as the Rangers No. 4 prospect tried to stretch an RBI double into a triple.

"It was a big play. [Center fielder Roman] Quinn did a great job getting the ball off the wall and he got it in quick to me," Reynolds said. "Dante Bichette put a great tag on the guy. That was a big momentum swing because it went from a runner on third with one out to no one on with two outs."

Despite going hitless, Quinn -- the Phillies' No. 5 prospect -- walked twice, stole three bases and scored twice.

Phillies right-hander Nefi Ogando (1-0) ended up with the win, despite allowing a run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings.

Sixth-ranked Mariners prospect Patrick Kivlehan had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the Saguaros.
