Anderson paces Desert Dogs in AFL rout

White Sox No. 2 prospect collects three hits, stolen base, scores twice
October 15, 2014

After a slow start in the Arizona Fall League, Tim Anderson is showing everyone what he can do.

The White Sox No. 2 prospect smacked three hits, stole a base and scored twice on Tuesday night to lead Glendale to a 9-0 pounding of Peoria.

After striking out in the first inning, Anderson reached base in his next four plate appearances. The 21-year-old shortstop doubled and scored in the third, was hit by a pitch in the fifth, singled and scored again in the seventh and capped his night with another base hit in the eighth.

"I felt good," Anderson said. "I felt great. I was more comfortable. It feels good. Getting around the guys and getting to know them, they all are great guys. We're coming together and growing as a team."

Glendale had a 3-0 lead before scoring six times in the seventh inning to pull away. Steven Moya, the Tigers' No. 7 prospect, delivered a bases-loaded triple and Jason Esposito (Orioles) and Nick Ramirez (Brewers) added RBI doubles.

"Everybody was locked in at the plate," Anderson said. "Everybody was seeing the ball real good."

After going 1-for-9 in his first two AFL games, Anderson has five hits in his last seven at-bats to get his average up to .375. MLB.com's No. 82 overall prospect is looking to improve all facets of his game during the six-week Fall League season.

"A lot of defense," Anderson said. "Basically getting better at-bats and getting jumps on the bag."

The 2013 first-round pick reached Double-A Birmingham in his first full pro season, batting .301 with 37 extra-base hits and 57 runs scored in 83 games between across three Minor League levels. He lost time due to a fractured right wrist, putting a damper on an otherwise strong year.

"It was kind of difficult," Anderson said of the injury. "I went out to Arizona on rehab and got stronger, got my range of motion back. My timing was fine because I was able to stand in, taking live [batting practice] and take my ground balls. So I stayed on track."

Moya finished with four RBIs while fellow Tigers prospect Daniel Fields swiped two bases and scored three runs for Glendale.

Dodgers No. 19 prospect Matt Magill (1-1) tossed three hitless innings and struck out three for the win.

"He did a great job," Anderson said. "He came out and competed. He has a strong arm and he did great."

Jordan Smith (Indians) collected two of the Javelinas' three hits.
