Ochinko plates all five runs for Mesa

Coming off suspension-shortened season, Jays catcher finds groove
October 17, 2014

Sean Ochinko missed half the season due to a suspension, but he's been making up for lost time in the Arizona Fall League.

On Friday afternoon, the Blue Jays farmhand homered and provided all the offense as Mesa topped Surprise, 5-3, for its third straight win.

"That's how it goes sometimes. You try to prepare the same way every day. Some days you go 0-for-4 and other days you have good results," the 26-year-old catcher said. "I'm just happy to have us win today."

In August 2013, Ochinko was suspended 50 games for testing positive for an amphetamine. Sidelined through June, the LSU product hit .314 with two homers and 10 RBIs in his first 10 games with Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo. He went into a 6-for-45 funk in his last 14 contests and ended up batting .213 with three homers and 13 RBIs.

Ochinko has turned things around in the AFL, where he's hitting .438 with three doubles and seven RBIs through five games -- matching his RBI total from his 2012 Fall League campaign.

"I only took about two or three weeks off, then I was playing down in Florida for about a week, got some at-bats there," he said. "So it's actually been a pretty easy transition."

Surprise grabbed an early lead on back-to-back blasts from Mariners No. 2 prospect D.J. Peterson and Seth Mejias-Brean (Reds) in the second inning. In the fifth, Jace Peterson (Padres) tripled home Red Sox prospect Rusney Castillo to make it 3-0.

Ochinko took over in the sixth, smacking a two-run double to get the Solar Sox on the board. He put them in front in the eighth with a three-run fastball on a fastball from Rangers right-hander Cody Kendall. The five-RBI game was his first since he homered twice for Class A Advanced Dunedin on June 20, 2011.

A's top prospect Daniel Robertson reached base four times and scored twice for Mesa.

"Everyone's getting comfortable with each other. It's a bunch of guys coming together," Ochinko said. "Everyone's from different teams, so it takes us a little while to get comfortable, learn guys' roles and know who everybody is. But it seems like everything's going well at this point."

Blue Jays right-hander Blake McFarland (1-0) worked around a hit in two scoreless innings for the win and Angels No. 14 prospect Trevor Gott (Angels) worked the ninth for his first AFL save. Solar Sox starter Nate Smith -- the Angels' 18th-ranked prospect -- two runs on two hits (both homers) and three walks while striking out one over 3 1/3 frames.

Padres No. 19 prospect Tayron Guerrero (0-2) was charged with two runs on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.
