A's land infielder Wendle from Tribe

Oakland picks up infield depth in exchange for slugger Brandon Moss
December 8, 2014

Three of Cleveland's top 10 prospects, per MLB.com, are middle infielders. With Oakland dangling Brandon Moss and depth to deal from, the Indians made a trade for the slugger Monday.

The Indians and A's announced they had agreed to swap Moss for second base prospect Joe Wendle, who was ranked No. 9 in Cleveland's system. The site has sinced placed him at No. 14 in Oakland's farm system.

Wendle is a 24-year-old second baseman who hit .265 with eight homers and a .725 OPS in 93 games, mostly with Double-A Akron, in 2014. Those numbers were a step back for the 2012 sixth-round pick after hitting .295 with 16 homers and an .885 OPS with Class A Advanced Carolina in 2013. Most of his 2014 damage came before late June, when Wendle suffered a broken hamate bone and missed more than a month.

MLB.com's Pipeline touts Wendle's hitting ability as his "lone standout tool," noting that he has a good plate approach and hits using the whole field. The infielder could be an average defender at second base, with the Pipeline team praising him as a "steady, capable second baseman."

Wendle is a fit for Oakland as a nearly MLB-ready middle infielder -- the team currently has Eric Sogard penciled in to start at second base, with Nick Punto on the bench and no notable prospects with experience at Double-A or higher at the keystone.

In exchange for Wendle, Cleveland will have control of Moss for the next two years, with MLBTradeRumors.com projecting the outfielder/first baseman to earn $7.1 million via arbitration this offseason.
