Pirates acquire Tarpley in Snider deal

Orioles trade lefty, player to be named for 2006 first-round pick
January 27, 2015

Stephen Tarpley wasn't a Baltimore prospect for long.

On Tuesday, the Pirates acquired the southpaw, who was the Orioles' No. 14 prospect at the time of the trade, and a player to be named later for outfielder Travis Snider.

"We didn't plan or intend to move (Snider)," Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "But we feel we have enough depth the sustain the loss. We've gained two quality players, we've created roster flexibility, and we've created some payroll flexibility."

Tarpley, a 2013 third-round pick, had 13 appearances (12 starts) at short-season Aberdeen in 2014, going 3-5 with a 3.66 ERA. Over 66 1/3 innings, he struck out 60 and walked 24 while recording a .279 average against and a 1.40 WHIP. The 21-year-old saved his best performance for last, fanning 10 over eight scoreless innings in his final start of the season..

"There are some things to like here," Huntington told the newspaper. "We like the upside."

Snider, 26, was selected by Toronto with the 14th pick of the 2006 Draft and went to Pittsburgh via a trade in 2012. Last season, he posted a .264/.338/.438 slash line with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs over 140 games.

"Snider is a solid dependable power-hitting outfielder and is an excellent fit for Camden Yards," Baltimore executive vice president Dan Duquette told MLB.com. "[He] should be a good addition to the club at bat and in the field."
