Report: Magee forsakes football for outfield

Former Buccaneers linebacker drafted in 2008 by Rays, Red Sox in '12
March 25, 2015

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived linebacker Brandon Magee on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday morning, he reportedly was on his way to Fort Myers, Florida, to be an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox.

While driving to JetBlue Park at Fenway South, the 24-year-old told the Tampa Bay Times,"I'm grateful for the opportunity [the Bucs] gave me at the time. Right now, I'm focused on Spring Training."

Magee was taken by the Rays in the 29th round of the 2008 Draft out of Centennial High School in Corona, California, but rather opted to play football and baseball at Arizona State University. The Red Sox selected him in the 23rd round in 2012.

He attended Boston's camp last year and also worked out as in extended spring training, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

As a football player, Magee saw action in nine games last year and recorded one tackle. He played eight games for the Cleveland Browns during the 2013-14 season.
