Correa nets three hits in Grapefruit action

Houston's top prospect now batting .341; Bryant collects four hits
March 28, 2015

Top Astros prospect Carlos Correa continued his solid spring on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base in Houston's 1-1 tie against Miami.

The 20-year-old shortstop played the entire game, which was his first three-hit game and fourth multi-hit game of the Grapefruit League. He went 2-for-4 with a homer in his last game, on Wednesday.

Two of Correa's singles on Saturday came against Marlins starter Mat Latos, and he dug out an infield hit against reliever Aaron Crow to load the bases with two outs in the eighth inning. Crow retired Alex Presley to leave the game deadlocked.

Correa, a non-roster invitee and MLB.com's No. 3 prospect in all of baseball, is hitting .341 (14-for-41) with a .372 on-base percentage and .512 slugging percentage through 18 spring games.

Last year would have been the second full season for the 2012 No. 1 overall Draft pick, but a broken right fibula sidelined him after 66 games with Class A Advanced Lancaster. To that point, he'd batted .325 with 57 RBIs and 20 steals, and he drew frequent praise for his defensive play.

He's slated to begin the regular season with Double-A Corpus Christi in the Texas League.

Pederson stays hot for Dodgers: Dodgers' No. 3 prospect Joc Pederson continued to show he's ready for a crack at the big leagues, slugging a two-run homer in Los Angeles' 5-4 win over the Angels.

Pederson, who has a clear path to a job in the Majors thanks to December's Matt Kemp trade, has done his part to capitalize on his chance this spring. In 21 Cactus League games, the 21-year-old outfielder is batting .373 with five homers and 11 RBIs while scoring 12 runs for the Dodgers. Pederson spent the entire 2014 season with Triple-A Albuquerque, slugging 33 homers and stealing 30 bases, winning Pacific Coast League MVP honors.

Pedro Baez, the Dodgers' No. 16 prospect, recorded two outs while fanning one in relief.

Angels' No. 7 prospect Kyle Kubitza was 0-for-1 in the loss.

Cubbies gonna club: Cubs' top prospect Kris Bryant didn't need to go yard or even notch an RBI against the Rockies to 'wow' fans yet again. Instead, he showed he can also play small ball. The 23-year-old collected four hits and scored three runs as Chicago topped Colorado, 18-4.

MLB.com's second overall prospect did show some of his signature pop however with a line drive double in his first at-bat before sticking with singles in his next three. Although he didn't touch them all, Bryant still leads the Majors with nine homers this spring.

While Bryant took a rare break from driving in runs, MLB.com's No. 5 overall prospect Addison Russell collected two RBIs while also scoring a run. Cubs No. 22 prospect Jacob Hannemann drove in a run while the club's No. 15 prospect Jeimer Candelario scored a run after replacing Bryant at third base.

Rockies' No. 3 prospect David Dahl was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

In the Cubs other split squad game, Chicago's third-ranked prospect Jorge Soler went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk against the Reds.

Billy's burning up: Spring Training has been good to Billy Burns and on Saturday, it got even better. The A's No. 21 prospect added four more knocks to his spring total against the White Sox to bring his average up to .381. Burns, who has been the club's main leadoff man and centerfielder all camp also scored three runs in the contest.

Even with a three-game hitless streak that ended against the White Sox, the 25-year-old leads the Majors with 24 hits. He also leads Oakland with four stolen bases and was caught for just the second time on Saturday. This hot-hitting burst comes after Burns' most trying season in which he hit .237 across Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento.

Burns' teammate Max Muncy -- Oakland's No. 24 prospect -- chipped in three RBIs in the game as well as his club-leading eighth walk.

Wilson sets tone in Orioles win: Tyler Wilson, ranked No. 8 in the Baltimore system, held New York to one hit while striking out two over four innings in the Orioles' 10-2 thrashing of the Yankees.

The 25-year-old righty earned the victory in his first spring start. In six Grapefruit League appearances this year, he went 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA, 11 strikeouts and one walk across 14 innings.

Following the game, Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, where he finished last year.

Fellow Orioles right-hander Logan Verrett struck out two in a perfect inning of relief.
