Glenn & Flores Power BayBears to Win in Extras

April 11, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Rudy Flores' solo home run put the BayBears on top as Mobile improved to 2-0 with a 4-3 win over the Birmingham Barons in 11 innings Friday night at Regions Field. With the win, the BayBears join the Biloxi Shuckers as the only two Southern League teams to start the 2015 season with two straight victories.

Mobile took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning when outfielder Alex Glenn continued his opening-season tear, ripping a three-run home run to right field. The long ball was both Glenn and the BayBears' first homer of 2015. Through the first two games of the season, Glenn has tallied a league-best eight RBI.

The Barons struggled to get much going against BayBears RHP Braden Shipley. The righty had to settle for a no-decision, allowing just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out four in 6.2 innings on the mound. The lone run Shipley gave up came in the bottom of the second inning when Christian Marrero lead off with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI ground-out.

Mobile maintained a 3-1 lead until the eighth inning when Birmingham scored two runs off of BayBears RHP Jimmie Sherfy. The Barons took advantage of a walk and a wild pitch to knot the game up at 3-3.

Seth Simmons (1-0) would be credited with the win in relief after entering the game in the ninth inning and keeping the Barons off the scoreboard. Simmons pitched two full innings, not allowing any hits, while walking one and striking out two batters to set up Flores for the eleventh inning heroics.

Once Flores gave the BayBears the lead, RHP Enrique Burgos made his Double-A debut, retiring the side in order to earn his first save of the season.

The BayBears and Barons continue their series on Friday at 7:05 PM. RHP Yoan Lopez (0-0, 0.00) makes his first start of the year against RHP Tyler Danish (0-0, 0.00) for the Barons.

Mobile will open the gates to Hank Aaron Stadium for the first time this season for the BayBears home opener against the Biloxi Shuckers on April 15 at 6:35pm.
