Prospect Roundup: Games of April 21

O'Brien keeps slugging, Peraza swipes two and Rogers stays sharp
April 22, 2015

Braves 2B Jose Peraza, Triple-A Gwinnett: 3-for-4, R, BB, 2 SB -- The speedy middle infielder has been just OK this April, making plenty of contact but hitting just .265 through 12 games. Peraza has just three stolen bases and two extra-base hits in that time. Despite minimal power, Peraza hit .339 last year by making a lot of solid contact and utilizing his exceptional speed. Without more power or plate discipline, it will be interesting to see if Peraza's hit tool is enough to keep his average and on-base percentage above water against advanced pitching.

Twins LHP Taylor Rogers, Triple-A Rochester: 6 IP, 4 H, BB, 6 K -- Rogers has added velocity as a pro and has worked to sharpen his breaking ball. Things are clicking for him early in 2015, as he has 19 strikeouts and a 2.37 ERA over 19 innings (three starts). Minnesota fans are understandably excited to see Alex Meyer and Jose Berrios in the near future, but Rogers may be the most polished of the team's upper-level starting pitching prospects.

D-backs OF Peter O'Brien, Triple-A Reno: 3-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R -- Arizona thought that if it let O'Brien settle into the outfield early in 2015, he might be able to focus more on his offense and unlock some of his potential. It's looked like a wise move so far, as O'Brien is tied for the Minor League lead with five home runs. He's striking out notably less in the early going, helping him post a .431 average and 1.286 OPS through 13 games. It's early to draw conclusions, but if O'Brien cuts down on the strikeouts and maintains his power, he won't have to catch to provide Major League value.

Rangers RHP Luke Jackson, Triple-A Round Rock: 6 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 K -- The 23-year-old has electric stuff but has been inconsistent with his control throughout his career. He put together a solid start Tuesday after walking seven batters over his first 7 2/3 innings to start the year. If he can more consistently command the strike zone, he should be a Major League starter, but he has a big league future regardless, assuming he stays healthy.

Brewers OF Victor Roache, Class A Advanced Brevard County: 4-for-8, HR, 2 RBI, R, 3 K (double-header) -- The 23-year-old has major raw power but a ton of swing-and-miss in his game. He's repeating the Florida State League and still striking out a ton but does have three homers in 12 games to go along with a .988 OPS.

Rangers C Jose Trevino, Class A Hickory: 3-for-7, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, BB -- Trevino came out of Oral Roberts without a clear position and the Rangers are trying out the 2014 sixth-rounder at catcher. The 22-year-old should be too advanced offensively for the South Atlantic League, and indeed, he's hitting .366 with a 1.103 OPS so far. He'll need the reps behind the plate defensively, though, as he moved out from behind the plate late in his college career.
