Prospect Roundup: Games of April 25

Correa and Conforto go long again, Alvarez shows flashes in SAL
April 26, 2015

Rangers SS Hanser Alberto, Triple-A Round Rock: 3-for-5, HR, RBI, R, SB -- Last year's Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove winner has a slick mitt that fits all over the infield. That and his high-contact offensive profile should propel him to the Majors, though he may not be more than an excellent bench piece. Alberto is taking his first stab at Triple-A and performing about as expected, making a lot of contact but providing minimal power without a walk in 14 games.

Astros SS Carlos Correa, Double-A Corpus Christi: 3-for-9, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 K, SB -- After going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Game 1 of a doubleheader, Correa went off with three hits, a homer and a stolen base in the nightcap. The 20-year-old has some exciting numbers in Double-A so far, like a .356 average and 1.076 OPS. He's also striking out in 23 percent of his plate appearances, which is an eight-point spike from last year. Obviously, that's not especially alarming considering how well he's hit. It may be an indication that there is room for Correa to grow as a hitter in the Texas League before he jumps to Triple-A or the Majors, though.

Astros 3B Colin Moran, Double-A Corpus Christi: 5-for-8, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 2 R, K, BB -- Moran got off to a sluggish start to 2015 but has three straight multi-hit games, including a run-producing mash fest in a doubleheader yesterday. The North Carolina product has a .254 average and .674 OPS for the season, including seven doubles in 15 games.

Nationals RHP Joe Ross, Double-A Harrisburg: 7 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 8 K -- The 21-year-old dropped his ERA to 3.60 in four Eastern League starts. Ross was acquired in the massive Wil Myers three-team deal this past offseason and landed in Harrisburg after making four appearances (three starts) in Double-A with the Padres last year. The 2011 first-rounder (25th overall) has done a good job missing bats thus far, posting 24 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Mets OF Michael Conforto, Class A Advanced St. Lucie: 3-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB -- Another day, another Roundup mention for Conforto. The Oregon State product is dominating the Florida State League as few before him have, considering how pitcher-friendly most of the parks are. Through 17 games, he has a .338 average and 1.051 OPS. He's slugged five homers and still has more walks than strikeouts. Expect a bump to Double-A before the All-Star break, if not much sooner.

White Sox 2B Eddy Alvarez, Class A Kannapolis: 2-for-4, HR, RBI, R, K, SB -- Alvarez is a fascinating story, and, despite being 25 and still in the South Atlantic League, he still has a chance to become a legitimate prospect. The infielder's baseball career was put on hold as he prepared to compete in short track speed skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics, where he won Silver in the 5000 m relay. As you'd expect, Alvarez is a superb athlete. So far, he's hit like a prospect, posting a .335 average and .899 OPS in 60 Minor League games, all at Class A or below. He'll have to prove he can hit against competition closer to his own age, but if anything, he's punishing more experienced competition right now, which is a promising first step.

Twins RHP Felix Jorge, Class A Cedar Rapids: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K -- Jorge and Stephen Gonsalves have been dominant thus far for the Kernels. Through three starts, Jorge is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA. Last year, the Dominican hurler struck out 23 and walked 20 over 39 Midwest League innings. This year, he has a 24-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 18 innings and has yet to allow a homer to boot.
