Prospect Roundup: Games of April 30

Davidson encores with homer, Arcia stays hot and Hu dominates
May 1, 2015

White Sox 3B Matt Davidson, Triple-A Charlotte: 2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI, BB -- The 24-year-old has homers in consecutive games now after driving in six in a three-hit performance on Wednesday. Once a top prospect in the D-backs system, Davidson struggled with Charlotte in 2014 but is trying to make good on a mulligan in the International League. Davidson has five homers and a .534 slugging percentage through 19 games, though he's still striking out a bunch. His .859 OPS is the highest he's had since Class A.

Brewers SS Orlando Arcia, Double-A Biloxi: 3-for-4 -- Arcia was the featured prospect in this week's Stock Watch. One of the Minors' best defenders at short, the 20-year-old is breaking out with the bat, hitting .409 with six extra-base hits through 20 games.

Astros LHP Josh Hader, Double-A Corpus Christi: 5 IP, 5 H, R, ER, 5 K -- Hader has produced results beyond his stuff throughout his pro career, including a 2.70 ERA in 27 appearances with Class A Advanced Lancaster in 2014. The 21-year-old walked four on Opening Day, but has a 12-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 12 innings since. Hader has a chance to be a back-of-the-rotation starter based on his stuff, but given his performance history, he might continue to outperform his scouting report.

Dodgers RHP Jose De Leon, Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga: 6 IP, 7 H, R, ER, HR, BB, 7 K -- The 22-year-old allowed his first California League home run but was dominant otherwise. In 18 innings this year, De Leon has 26 strikeouts and just five walks. His 2.50 ERA is particularly impressive considering the run environment. De Leon's fastball-slider combo will get him to the Major Leagues; the effectiveness of his changeup will largely determine whether as a starter or reliever.

Astros OF Brett Phillips, Class A Advanced Lancaster: 3-for-5, HR, 2B, RBI, R, K -- Phillips fell a triple shy of the cycle and lifted his average to .341 in 20 games this year. The outfielder probably has the strongest arm in the system, the ability to play center field and a well-rounded game at the plate. Houston adores the 20-year-old's makeup, and the Astros think that combined with his tools will make for an everyday player in the Majors.

Red Sox 2B Wendell Rijo, Class A Advanced Salem: 2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI, R, 2 K, SB -- Rijo generates tremendous bat speed for a 5-foot-11 middle infielder, but the stroke has some violence to it, too. After hitting .254 with nine homers in Greenville last year, Rijo is hitting .246 with two round-trippers this year. He may not generate a ton of over-the-fence power, but Rijo could be a doubles machine if his plate approach comes along.

Twins RHP Chih-Wei Hu, Class A Advanced Fort Myers: 6 IP, 4 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 8 K -- The 21-year-old Taiwanese right-hander is making Florida State League hitters look foolish. Through four starts, he has a 1.50 ERA and 28-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 24 innings. Hu is a rarity in that he throws a palmball, which dives in a fashion similar to a split-finger or exceptional changeup. His stuff isn't overpowering, but he has advanced command and may have to get to Double-A before hitters challenge him and his arsenal.

Mets RHP Marcos Molina, Class A Advanced St. Lucie: 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K -- Molina has been hittable but still effective thus far in the FSL, which is promising considering the 20-year-old jumped straight from Class A Short Season Brooklyn to the Class A Advanced level. The Dominican hurler matured notably last year, shaking a tendency to crumble under pressure. He boasts a low-to-mid-90s fastball, an advanced changeup and a slider that's taken major strides in the last year -- Brooklyn manager Tom Gamboa said the breaking pitch was "devastating" by year's end last season.
