Prospect Roundup: Games of May 13

Refsnyder doubles up, Dahl goes yard and Medeiros looks sharp
May 14, 2015

Yankees 2B Rob Refsnyder, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: 2-for-4, 2 2B, R, K, BB -- Refsnyder has his average up to .293 with quality plate-discipline numbers. He's yet to hit a homer and is slugging just .388 but proved last year he has the strength to generate some pop (including in winning the MiLBY for Best Home Run). The big question with Refsnyder is defense. He's still rough at the keystone and has just a .954 fielding percentage this year. He's played 257 games at second in his pro career now, so if he's going to put it together with the glove, it should be sometime soon. With just fringe-average defense, he should be a better contributor this year than Stephen Drew, but it's questionable if Refsnyder's glove is even that good at the moment (though he has made some highlight-reel plays like this one).

Rockies OF David Dahl, Double-A New Britain: 2-for-5, HR, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R -- The 21-year-old has multi-hit performances in four of his past five games and is batting .333 over his past 10 contests. Dahl is a tremendous athlete who covers a ton of ground in center field and causes all sorts of problems on the bases. Despite a mere .286 on-base percentage, he has 11 steals already this year. He struck out more than usual over the first month of the season, but is showing signs of improvement in his first stab at Double-A pitching.

Yankees C Gary Sanchez, Double-A Trenton: 3-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R -- Sanchez is repeating the Eastern League and not exactly doing it with aplomb. The 22-year-old has a .255 average with three homers and a .689 OPS. Reviews on his maturity and work ethic have lacked enthusiasm over the past few years, and as seems to happen with players like that, Sanchez has stalled out a bit at Double-A. He still has impressive power and the hit tool to make it play enough for the catching position. Reports on his receiving just aren't all that good, which means his bat will have to play elsewhere, probably at first base.

Marlins LHP Jarlin Garcia, Class A Advanced Jupiter: 5 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K -- The 22-year-old has a 2.65 ERA in seven starts, striking out 32 and walking 13 over 37 1/3 innings. He hasn't commanded the strike zone quite as well as he did in 2014, but he's been plenty effective. The Dominican southpaw has a low-to-mid 90s fastball he controls well but needs to settle on a more consistent secondary repertoire.

Athletics 3B Matt Chapman, Class A Advanced Stockton: 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R -- Chapman missed the start of the season with a knee injury and only debuted last week. He went 1-for-18 in his first five games but busted out with his first homer on Wednesday. The 2014 first-rounder (25th overall) could be a tremendous defender at third. He already has an elite arm and an excellent first step. His only real weakness defensively is on charging slow rollers, but some improvements to his flexibility should let him improve there with time.

Brewers LHP Kodi Medeiros, Class A Wisconsin: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 8 K -- Medeiros is hard to project as a Major Leaguer because he's very unique in his delivery and stuff, but he's occasionally been dominant in the Midwest League this year. The 18-year-old has a funky motion and a ton of sink and run on his low-to-mid 90s fastball. That pitch is the primary reason he has 4 1/2 times as many groundouts as flyouts through seven appearances.
