Prospect Roundup: Games of May 17

Cubs' Torres stays hot and Angels' Heaney looks ready for promotion
May 18, 2015

Angels LHP Andrew Heaney, Triple-A Salt Lake: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 7 K -- The Angels acquired Heaney to help their rotation in the short and long term, and it looks like the 23-year-old is ready to get back to the Majors after a lackluster debut with Miami late last year. Heaney has a 3.12 ERA with just one homer allowed in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He's striking out about a batter per inning and limiting the walks, checking all the performance boxes necessary to earn a promotion.

Padres SS Trea Turner, Double-A San Antonio: 2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB -- With Corey Seager and Carlos Correa promoted to Triple-A, the 21-year-old Turner has been among the Texas League's best players this year. Turner is batting .326 with four homers and seven stolen bases. He's got his on-base percentage at .405 and slugging percentage at .504, all with the chops to play shortstop in the Major Leagues. Turner will be Padres' property until June 13, when he'll reportedly be traded to Washington as a player to be named later from December's Wil Myers deal.

Phillies RHP Zach Eflin, Double-A Reading: 8 IP, 4 H, ER, HR, BB, 2 K -- The 21-year-old began his season with 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, then went into a bit of a slump that came to an end on Sunday. Eflin hasn't missed many bats this year, but when he's on his game, he's using his sinking fastball and above average changeup to induce a lot of ground balls and weak contact. Eflin got 14 groundouts in Reading's win on Sunday.

Twins RHP Tyler Duffey, Double-A Chattanooga: 7 IP, 7 H, R, ER, 3 BB, 12 K -- Reports on Duffey's stuff grade it as roughly average, but that hasn't stopped the 24-year-old from inducing whiffs in the Southern League this year. The 2012 fifth-rounder has 54 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings, which has helped him post a 2.56 ERA. If results like this persist, expect a jump to Triple-A Rochester and possibly the Majors this year for Duffey, who could fit at the back of a Major League rotation.

Rangers OF/SS Ryan Cordell, Class A Advanced High Desert: 2-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI, 2 K -- The 2013 11th-round pick has been a pleasant surprise for the Rangers, mashing his way through the Minors' lower levels. Drafted as an outfielder, Cordell has taken some reps at shortstop this season. If he can make that transition, his bat projects to be above average for the position and he could blossom into an above-average regular. Making the transition to shortstop at 23 is a tall task, though.

White Sox OF Adam Engel, Class A Advanced Winston-Salem: 4-for-5, HR, 3B, 3 RBI, 3 R -- The 23-year-old is a stellar athlete and tremendous defender in center, but his bat had always been a major question mark dating back to his college days at Louisville. After an offseason spent playing professionally in Australia, Engel is having a career year, hitting .293 with three homers and 20 stolen bases through 38 games. There's upside for Engel to become an everyday player, or even more, but he still has a lot to prove at the plate to get there.

Mets OF Michael Conforto, Class A Advanced St. Lucie: 2-for-3, 2 2B, R, BB -- Conforto's outstanding April has given way to a fairly lackluster May, as he's batting just .233 without a homer through 15 games this month. The 2014 first-rounder (10th overall) has still made plenty of contact, just without the authority he showed in his first month. Expect the 22-year-old to right the ship and get to Double-A at some point this year.

Rays 1B Casey Gillaspie, Class A Bowling Green: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, R, K -- The Rays gave their 2014 first-rounder (20th overall) a softball assignment, sending the Wichita State product to Class A despite his college successes. Gillaspie hasn't exactly overpowered the Midwest League, batting .227 through his first 33 games. There might be some poor batted ball luck in there, as his strikeout numbers aren't concerning and he's still slugged seven homers. Still, you expect more from a polished college bat, especially one that's limited to first base.

Cubs SS Gleyber Torres, Class A South Bend: 3-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 K -- Torres won't turn 19 until December, and yet he's been dominant in the Midwest League this season. The Venezuelan is hitting .338 with a .423 on-base percentage and .431 slugging percentage. He's yet to homer, but has eight doubles and eight stolen bases, with reviews of his defense suggesting a good chance to remain up the middle.

Red Sox RHP Michael Kopech, Class A Greenville: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 K -- Scouting reviews on Boston's 2014 first-round pick (33rd overall) have been outstanding. Ryan Parker from Baseball Prospectus reported the 19-year-old was at 95-99 mph with his fastball yesterday -- and generally sitting around the top end of that scale. The 6-foot-3 right-hander has 24 strikeouts and a 3.04 ERA through 23 2/3 innings this year.
