Pitchers of the Week

For games ending May 17
May 18, 2015

Here's a look at the top pitching performers in each league for the week ending May 17:

International League
Tommy Milone, Rochester
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 12 K)
A veteran of 90 Major League appearances, the 28-year-old was demoted from Minnesota to Triple-A and made his Rochester debut on May 8. He tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, then followed that with eight dominant, scoreless frames against Toledo on May 13. Milone has 20 strikeouts through 14 1/3 scoreless Triple-A innings after posting a 4.76 ERA in four Major League starts.

Pacific Coast League
Tim Cooney, Memphis
(1-0, 0.61 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 14 2/3 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 2 HBP, 3 BB, 9 K)
The 2012 third-rounder shot through the Minor Leagues, reaching Triple-A by Opening Day of 2014 and posting solid numbers in the Redbirds' rotation last year. He's been even better this year, with a 3.00 ERA through six starts. Cooney capped his week with 7 2/3 scoreless innings against Omaha on May 16. He struck out six, walked two and allowed just one hit in the win.

Eastern League
Matt Boyd, New Hampshire
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 12 IP, 11 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 2 BB, 11 K)
The 24-year-old posted consecutive goose eggs for the Fisher Cats, blanking New Britain at home for five innings then shutting out Binghamton for seven frames. Boyd -- who is a distant relative of Bob Feller -- has a 1.02 ERA through eight starts. He's struck out 48 over 44 1/3 innings and has yet to allow a home run. The Oregon State product has made a big turnaround from when he posted a 6.96 ERA in 10 Double-A starts in 2014.

Southern League
Jose Berrios, Chattanooga
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 1 HBP, 2 BB, 8 K)
Minnesota's No. 4 prospect picked up his second career shutout on May 13, blanking Birmingham on the Barons' home turf. The 2012 first-round pick (32nd overall) rocketed from Class A Advanced to Triple-A in 2014, but returned to Double-A to open 2015. He's 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA in seven starts with the Lookouts, striking out 53 batters in 45 innings.

Texas League
Miguel Almonte, NW Arkansas
(2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 10 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 1 HBP, 3 BB, 5 K)
Almonte, ranked fifth in the Royals' farm system, posted a pair scoreless, five-inning outings last week. First, he limited Arkansas to two hits and two walks on May 11. Then, on May 16, he blanked Springfield while allowing just two hits and one walk. The 22-year-old has a 2.73 ERA through eight starts, although Almonte has yet to record an out in the sixth inning this season.

California League
Kyle Finnegan, Stockton
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 6 K)
Finnegan only took the ball once last week, but he made his presence felt with six scoreless frames against High Desert on May 14. Stockton went on to win that game, 5-2, giving Finnegan his second victory of the season. The 23-year-old has a 4.17 ERA through seven starts.

Carolina League
Dakota Bacus, Potomac
(2-0, 0.82 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 11 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 4 BB, 14 K)
Bacus kicked off his week by picking up his first win of the season in a 5-1 victory over Frederick. In that game, he picked up seven strikeouts and allowed just one run allowed over five innings. He quickly followed with win No. 2 five days later, again striking out seven over six scoreless frames in another defeat of the Keys. In eight appearances (five starts) this year, the 24-year-old has a 2.33 ERA with more than a strikeout per inning.

Florida State League
Buddy Borden, Charlotte
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 2 BB, 3 K)
Borden tossed the second no-hitter in Stone Crabs history last week when he blanked Clearwater in the seven-inning Game 1 of a doubleheader. Borden got a little help from his defense -- most notably, a triple play in the fourth inning -- but also dominated a Threshers team that ranked second in the Florida State League with a .258 average. "I have the most confidence in my fastball," Borden told MiLB.com. "It's no secret I like to throw it. I think the hardest pitch to hit in baseball is a well-located fastball. I showed some other stuff to keep them from sitting dead-red, but that was mostly it today."

Midwest League
A.J. Ladwig, West Michigan
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0, HBP, 1 BB, 10 K)
A 2014 11th-round pick out of Wichita State, Ladwig got hit around a bit over his first five starts but was dominant his sixth time out. On May 14, he tossed eight scoreless innings and set a career high with 10 strikeouts in an 11-0 win over Bowling Green. The 22-year-old has a 4.63 ERA, striking out 30 batters and walking just five over 35 innings for the Whitecaps.

South Atlantic League
Jordan Guerrero, Kannapolis
(2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 13 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 1 HBP, 4 BB, 18 K)
Guerrero has been a breakout performer this year, posting a 1.37 ERA through seven starts with more than a strikeout per inning. The 20-year-old kicked off his week with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless frames on May 11, then added eight more punchouts over six scoreless frames against Lakewood on May 17. The 2012 fifth-round pick is ranked 28th in the White Sox farm system.
