Prospect Roundup: Games of May 29

Rays' O'Conner lashes three hits; D-backs' Ray strikes out nine
May 30, 2015

D-backs LHP Robbie Ray, Triple-A Reno: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 R, 3 BB, 9 K -- In his finest outing since returning the Aces after a solid May 6 spot start for the D-backs, Ray allowed more than one baserunner in only one of seven innings en route to his second Pacific Coast League win this year. His nine strikeouts give him an impressive 57 over 41 2/3 Triple-A innings, and he's walked 27 in that span. Friday's was also the longest starts of the season for Ray, who's put up a 3.67 ERA against PCL hitters.

Padres OF Rymer Liriano, Triple-A El Paso: 2-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs, 3 R, BB, SB -- All of Liriano's offensive tools were on display as he led the Chihuahuas in a 14-2 romp over the Iowa Cubs. He stole a base and came around to score after walking in the first inning, then swatted a three-run dinger to bust the game open in the third. The 23-year-old native of the Dominican Republic added an RBI single in a five-run sixth, and by the time the dust settled he'd boosted his PCL on-base percentage to .378. It was Liriano's second straight two-hit game.

Padres RF Alex Dickerson, Triple-A El Paso: 3-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs, 2B, 3 R -- Hitting one spot behind Liriano, Dickerson cleaned up nicely for the Chihuahuas falling just a triple shy of the cycle. Dickerson kicked things off with a two-run blast in the first and helped his team bat around in the third and sixth. The Indiana University product collected his third multi-hit game this week to boost his average to a team-leading .314.

Braves RHP Cody Martin, Triple-A Gwinnett: W, 5 IP, 0 R, 0BB, 6 K -- After beginning the season in Atlanta's bullpen, Martin (1-1) is back to stretching out in the International League. In his second start of the year, the 25-year-old Gonzaga product hurled 3 2/3 perfect frames before allowing a one-out single in the fourth, but then sat down the next four batters he faced in his longest outing of the season. Martin has held foes to one run on four hits in 9 1/3 innings to lower his ERA to 0.96 across his three Minor League outings.

Rays C Justin O'Conner, Double-A Montgomery: 3-for-6, RBI, SB -- O'Conner put together his second three-hit performance in three games, and his third stolen base of the season came one day after he recorded his second. Tampa Bay's top prospect slapped a fifth-inning RBI single to give the Biscuits their first lead over Jackson, and he contributed another hit during the decisive 12th-inning rally to help Montgomery win, 4-3. O'Conner had a tough first six weeks of the season at the dish, but he's 9-for-22 (.409) over his last five games. His Southern League average now stands at .212, up from .172 on May 11.

Dodgers OF Cody Bellinger, Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga: 2-for-3, 2 2B, 3 RBIs, 2 R -- After Bellinger's 15-game hitting streak ended on May 21, he went ahead and started another one, which is now up to seven. Friday night's two doubles give him 14 total bases and nine RBIs in a three-day span, and he's scored a run in five straight. Bellinger's 24 extra-base hits tie him for third most in the California League, and he's slashing .287/.357/.540.

Reds CF Phillip Ervin, Class A Advanced Daytona: 4-for-6, 4 RBIs, 2B, 2 R -- After recording one hit over his last three games, the leadoff hitter broke out for the Tortugas. Ervin tied career marks for hits and RBIs while having his biggest night at the plate this season. The 22-year-old led off the game with a single and then took advantage of the men-on opportunities in his next four at-bats to reach season highs. Ervin leads the Florida State League with nine homers and 31 RBIs.

Marlins LHP Michael Mader, Class A Greensboro: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K -- A supplemental pick of the Marlins in the third round of last year's Draft, Mader turned in his longest, and perhaps finest, professional start to earn his first victory since May 1. The 21-year-old Floridian had been boxed around his last two times out, coughing up a total of 10 runs -- eight earned -- on 14 hits and three walks over 8 2/3 innings. He broke that slide by shrugging off a few defensive miscues behind him and limiting Lakewood to three hits. The scoreless appearance brings his ERA down to 5.32, which means there's still work to do to match the 2.00 mark he put up for Class A Short Season Batavia last year.
