MiLB announces May Players of the Month

First basemen claim five of 10 monthly awards in full-season leagues

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Minor League Baseball today announced the Player of the Month Award winners for each of the 10 full-season leagues for the month of May. Each winner will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of the honor.

Indianapolis Indians shortstop Alen Hanson led the International League with a .362 batting average, 42 hits, 16 extra-base hits, five triples, 69 total bases, 22 runs scored and a .595 slugging percentage. The 22-year-old was signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent in 2009.

Fresno Grizzlies first baseman Jon Singleton led the Pacific Coast League in extra-base hits in May with 18, including 10 homers and seven doubles, while driving in 37 runs and scoring 22 times. Singleton, 23, was drafted by Philadelphia in the eighth round in 2009 before being traded to Houston in 2011 as part of the trade for outfielder Hunter Pence. He was named PCL Player of the Week for the week ending May 17.

Richmond Flying Squirrels first baseman Ricky Oropesa set the pace in the Eastern League with a .602 slugging percentage and 65 total bases in May. The 25-year-old recorded 37 hits, six home runs, eight doubles and 25 RBI in May. Oropesa was the third round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2011 out of the University of Southern California.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals first baseman Balbino Fuenmayor led the Texas League in batting average (.391), runs (21), hits (45), extra-base hits (19), total bases (80), doubles (11) and slugging percentage (.696). He was second in the league in homers (eight) and RBI (22) in May. The 25-year-old Venezuelan was signed by the Kansas City Royals as a minor league free agent prior to the 2015 season.

Montgomery Biscuits left-handed starting pitcher Blake Snell led the Southern League with a 0.72 ERA and 44 strikeouts over 37.2 innings in May and was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 24. The 22-year-old allowed three earned runs over six starts in May. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in Compensation Round A of the 2011 Draft.

Lancaster JetHawks first baseman A.J. Reed topped the California League in home runs (10), extra-base hits (18) and slugging percentage (.664) in May and finished second in RBI (29) and hits (37). He was also named California League Player of the Week for the week ending May 10. Reed, 22, was selected by the Houston Astros in the second round of the 2014 Draft out of the University of Kentucky.

Frederick Keys first baseman Trey Mancini led the Carolina League with a .362 batting average, 42 hits, 67 total bases and a .578 slugging percentage in May. He was also second in the league in extra base hits (14) and fourth in RBI (19). Mancini, 23, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth round of the 2013 Draft out of Notre Dame.

Jupiter Hammerheads right-hander Scott Lyman went 4-0 with a 0.95 ERA in six starts to capture Florida State League Player of the Month honors. Lyman, 25, held opponents to a .169 batting average as he allowed only 22 hits over 38 innings. Lyman was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 10th round of the 2011 Draft out of the University of California-Davis.

Burlington Bees second baseman Andrew Daniel batted .302 with 16 extra-base hits, six home runs and 26 RBI to pick up Midwest League Player of the Month honors for May. Daniel, 22, was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 11th round of the 2014 Draft out of the University of San Diego.

Hickory Crawdads right-hander Ariel Jurado went 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA in five May starts to claim South Atlantic League Player of the Month honors. Jurado, 19, walked only four in 29 innings in May while posting a 4.09 ground ball to fly ball ratio. He was signed by the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent out of Panama in 2012 and has not allowed an earned run over his last four starts (22.0 IP).
