Bucs' Taillon to undergo surgery for hernia

After missing 2014 with elbow surgery, righty likely done for season
July 3, 2015

Pirates prospect Jameson Taillon suffered a setback in his return from Tommy John surgery, the Pirates announced Friday.

Pittsburgh's No. 2 prospect will undergo surgery next week to repair an inguinal hernia, according to reports, and is expected to miss roughly two months.

The second overall pick in the 2010 Draft, Taillon struck out 143 batters in 147 1/3 innings split between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis in 2013 before undergoing elbow surgery the following April. He missed the entire 2014 season and was working his way back to the Minor Leagues last month.

Taillon threw 61 pitches in an extended spring training game on June 13 but was scratched with lower abdominal pain from an expected start for the Gulf Coast League Pirates the following week.

A two-month recovery time would take Taillon to nearly the end of the Minor League regular season, though the Pirates could opt to get him some work in the Arizona Fall League beginning in October.
