Jackson Shut Out by Barons in Sunday Loss

Generals will try to avoid sweep in Monday afternoon's finale
July 12, 2015

Jackson, Tenn. - Jackson was held scoreless for the 11th time this season in a 3-0 loss to the first-place Birmingham Barons Sunday evening at The Ballpark at Jackson. Moises Hernandez turned in his first quality start of the season, but the Jackson offense only got one man into scoring position over the game's final six innings.

Hernandez (3-5, 4.30) went six innings for Jackson (6-11, 35-50) in a losing effort, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits. It was his longest start of the year and his first quality start since August of 2007 with the Mississippi Braves.

Birmingham (13-3, 46-39) scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. With one on and two outs, Ian Miller misplayed Adrian Nieto's fly ball to left-center and Brian Fletcher scored to put the Barons on top. Chris Jacobs followed with an RBI single that scored Nieto from second base to make it 2-0 Birmingham.

Tim Anderson manufactured a run in the fifth to add another score to Birmingham's tally. After leading off with a single, Anderson swiped second base and moved to third on a fly ball. He scampered home on a Hernandez wild pitch, scoring the only earned run of the contest to put the Barons up 3-0.

Jackson had six hits against Birmingham's Tony Buccifero (1-6, 5.85), but couldn't take advantage as the righty earned his first win of the season. Bucciferro got Tyler Smith and D.J. Peterson to fly out with two on and one out in the third inning, spoiling one of Jackson's best opportunities. Peterson's season-best seven-game hitting streak came to an end Sunday.

Julio Morban pushed his personal hitting streak to five games with a line drive to the gap in left-center field in the fourth, but he was thrown out trying to turn his double into a triple. The Generals did not get a runner past first base for the remainder of the contest, as Tyler Barnette and J.B. Wendelken combined to give up just two hits in four shutout innings of relief. Wendelken struck out five of the six men he faced over the final two innings.

Kyle Hunter was strong in two innings out of Jackson's bullpen, striking out two without allowing any Barons to reach base. Scott DeCecco tossed a scoreless ninth for the Generals.

The Generals will try to avoid their second five-game sweep of the season in Monday afternoon's series finale. Southpaw Misael Siverio (4-7, 4.17) will start for Jackson against Myles Jaye (8-3, 2.51), who has allowed just one run in 14 innings of work against the Generals this season.
