Prospect Roundup: Games of July 14

Rockies' Nunez builds on second half; Rangers' Beras tees off
July 15, 2015

RHP Samuel Coonrod, Class A Augusta: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR -- We highlighted the exploits of top Red Sox prospect Yoan Moncada and No. 14 Giants prospect Aramis Garcia in our recap of Greenville's 7-6 win over Augusta on Tuesday, but the GreenJackets starter deserves some ink, too. The 2014 fifth-rounder and No. 27 prospect in the San Francisco system tossed six innings for the third straight start and didn't issue a walk for the first time since May 27. That's especially noteworthy given he walked five in just 1 1/3 frames three starts ago on June 21 against Savannah. The 22-year-old right-hander, who can reach the mid-90s with his fastball, is 5-3 with a 2.69 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 83 strikeouts and 26 walks in 80 1/3 innings in his first pro season. The home run hit by Moncada was just the second allowed by Coonrod all season.

OF Jairo Beras, Class A Hickory: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, K -- Beras has been an enigma since signing with the Rangers back in 2012. Concerns about the validity of his birthdate kept him off the field until July 2013, and since then, he hasn't shown the results you'd expect from his package of tools, a package that led Texas to sign him for $4.5 million. The 20-year-old is back in the South Atlantic League after producing a .242/.305/.342 line with seven homers and 133 strikeouts in 110 games last season. His homer Tuesday was his fourth of the season and first since June 21. Beras is performing slightly better in 2015 with a .260/.315/.409 line and has his strikeout percentage down from 31.1 in 2014 to 28.4 this season. But after falling from the top 10 in the Rangers system a few years ago to his current state as the No. 21 prospect, it doesn't look like the 6-foot-5 slugger has done much to provide himself with any more helium in prospect rankings.

C Dom Nunez, Class A Asheville: 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, BB -- Speaking of helium, Nunez, a sixth-round pick out of a California high school in 2013, shot up to No. 8 in the Rockies system with an impressive 2014. He hit .313/.384/.517 with eight homers in 46 games during his second season at Rookie-level Grand Junction. What's more impressive is that he did that while making the full-time move to catcher, where he's received positive marks for his receiving skills. The 20-year-old's numbers haven't quite jumped out in the same way during his introduction to full-season ball at Asheville (.252/.348/.362), but that's been changing in July. In nine games this month, Nunez is 9-for-27 with two homers and -- get this -- a 2-to-14 K-to-BB ratio. All five of his homers this season have come since June 25 after he went dingerless in the first 48 contests of the season. With that type of turnaround, Nunez is becoming one to watch in the Sally League's second half.

OF T.J. Olesczuk, Class A Delmarva: 3-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, K -- In case you haven't caught on yet, Tuesday was a light night in the Minors with only the Sally League in action due to the Major League All-Star Game. But that allows some performances to shine all the brighter. Case in point: Olesczuk, a 40th-round pick out of South Carolina's Winthrop University in 2014. Batting out of the eighth spot, the 23-year-old outfielder tied a season-high with two doubles and plated three of the Shorebirds' 18 runs in a landslide win over Lexington. Olesczuk started his first full season with an aggressive assignment at Class A Advanced Frederick back in May and couldn't quite handle the Carolina League in a small sample, going just 4-for-19 (.158) in seven games. He's held his own since being moved to Delmarva on June 4, hitting .252/.324/.417 with three homers, 12 doubles and 30 RBIs in 37 contests.
