Volcanoes erupt for three homers in win

Salem-Keizer fights back from early deficit to take series lead
July 21, 2015

The Volcanoes belted three home runs and overcame an early deficit to defeat Tri-City 8-5 at Gesa Stadium Monday night.

Salem-Keizer trailed for the majority of the night but slugged its way past the Dust Devils, pounding out eight runs on 15 hits.

Salem-Keizer took an early 1-0 lead in the first but the Dust Devils came roaring right back, scoring three runs of their own. Five of the first six Tri-City batters reached to begin the bottom of the first, resulting in a 3-1 lead and chasing Volcanoes starter Logan Webb from the game.

The Volcanoes evened things up in the third, scoring two runs to tie the game. Shilo McCall led off the inning with a double before Steven Duggar hustled out a triple, allowing McCall to come in and score. Kevin Rivera then grounded out, scoring Duggar and tying the game at three runs apiece.

Carlos Belen reclaimed the lead for Tri-City with one swing of the bat the following half inning, blasting a two-run home run to straightaway center field. Belen had struggled mightily against Salem-Keizer coming into the game, going 1-for-17 with 14 strikeouts, but his first homer of the season put the Dust Devils ahead 5-3.

The wheels appeared to be coming off for the Salem-Keizer pitching staff, allowing five runs in the contest's first three frames, but reliever Mac Marshall came in and silenced the Dust Devils attack. The left-hander didn't allow a hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out six.

The performance appeared to inspire the Volcanoes offense as they tied things up yet again in the seventh. John Riley singled to lead off the inning before Shilo McCall belted a two-run homer to left, tying the game.

C.J. Hinojosa put Salem-Keizer out in front the following frame, hitting the first home run of his professional career over the left field fence. The next three batters reached before McCall lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Fernando Pujadas and extending the Volcanoes lead to 7-5. It was McCall's third RBI of the night.

Chris Shaw added an insurance run in the ninth, hitting a solo home run to center. It was the first time this season the Volcanoes tallied three homers in a game. Ryan Halstead (1-0, 2.31 ERA) tossed a scoreless 2 1/3 innings to close out the game and pick up his first win as a professional.

Player of the Game: Shilo McCall had another tremendous night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and a sacrifice fly. He also played solid defense in left field, tracking down two tricky fly balls in the ninth.

Up Next: The Volcanoes continue their series with the Tri-City Dust Devils Tuesday night. Nolan Riggs (2-1, 1.88 ERA) will make the start for Salem-Keizer. The broadcast will be available on volcanoesbaseball.com or through the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
