Royals Win Second Straight in Extra Innings

Two runs in 10th make up for surrendering lead in the ninth
July 25, 2015

Road Trip Recap presented by North Carolina's Amtrak. When Burlington Royals fans plan to hit the road, use the convenience of North Carolina's AMTRAK.

The Burlington Royals were an out away from a shutout victory over the Greeneville Astros. Even after a game-tying single, Burlington did not fold. With two runs in the 10th, the Royals won their second in a row with a 3-1 triumph.

How It Happened

Burlington (16-16) plated the game's first run in the top of the first. RF Luke Willis singled to lead off the game, and 2B Austin Bailey followed with a single of his own. DH Brandon Dulin hit a groundout to first, putting both runners into scoring position. CF Ben Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Willis and give the Royals a lead that held for nearly the entirety of the game.

Greeneville (16-14) got base runners in four innings but did not score. From the sixth through the eighth, the Royals kept the Astros off the basepaths.

The Astros tied the game in the ninth, even as the Royals came within one out of a shutout. 1B Conner Goedert doubled to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a groundout. Royals RHP Jacob Bodner induced a popout to second, and then hit DH Kevin Martir. Pinch Hitter Justin Garcia stepped up and promptly singled to center, and Goedert came in to tie the game. Bodner was able to wiggle his way out of the inning without further damage, setting up the Burlington offense.

Willis singled to left, and Bailey followed with a bunt single. Dulin singled to right to load the bases with none out, and Johnson won the game by driving in both Willis and Bailey. 3B Angelo Castellano singled to continue the streak of consecutive hits, but back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout ended the inning.

Bodner allowed one 10th inning single, but kept the Astros off the scoreboard.
