Transaction Ticker: August 17

Marshall and Suarez leave, Nelson returns, Watson set for Salem-Keizer debut
August 18, 2015

The work week got off to a busy start for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and the San Francisco Giants minor league system, as four transactions came down the wire on Monday afternoon. It was the first post-all star break player movement for the Volcanoes, who last saw RHP Jordan Johnson move to Advanced-A San Jose on August 3.

LHP Andy Suarez - to San Jose

The Giants second round pick from this year's draft and No. 15 overall prospect received the call-up to Advanced-A San Jose. The lefty spent just over a month on the Volcanoes roster, getting five starts and posting a 1-0 record with a 1.40 ERA. Suarez's final start was his most impressive, spinning five one-hit innings and facing the minimum en route to his first professional victory. The former Miami Hurricane logged 19 1/3 innings with Salem-Keizer, recording 15 strikeouts and just two walks. Suarez is just the second Volcano to make the jump to San Jose this season, following in the footsteps of RHP Jordan Johnson. He will join 20 former Volcanoes on the club's roster, including the likes of Christian Arroyo, Ryder Jones and Aramis Garcia.

LHP Mac Marshall - to Arizona League

Marshall was promoted to Salem-Keizer on July 8 and pitched in five different games for the Volcanoes, including two starts. The fourth-round pick and No. 16 Giants prospect allowed 10 earned runs off 18 base hits in 13 2/3 innings of work for Salem-Keizer. Between relief appearances on July 15 vs. Boise and July 20 at Tri-City, Marshall dazzled with 5 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings for Salem-Keizer, lowering his ERA to 3.12 at the time. After his third appearance with the Volcanoes, opponents were batting just over .100 versus the left-hander. Marshall joins three former Volcanoes on the Arizona League Giants roster.

LHP Grant Watson - from Arizona League

The 16th rounder out of UCLA turned some heads in his first month and a half of professional baseball. In nearly 27 innings of work with the AZL Giants, Watson compiled a 0.68 ERA with 30 strikeouts and three walks. His ERA was third in the Arizona League among pitchers with over 20 innings of work. Watson's last three appearances in the Rookie League were starts and he is currently riding an 18-inning scoreless streak.

OF Mark Nelson - from Arizona League

Nelson rejoins the Volcanoes roster after opening 2015 with the club. The outfielder spent 24 days in the Arizona League, playing in just four contests and going 0-for-13. In his first stint with Salem-Keizer, the former Independent Leaguer posted a .174 batting average and .304 on-base percentage over 46 at bats in 15 games. In the starting lineup for five of the first six games of 2015, Nelson saw his playing time decrease with the additions of 2015 draft picks Ronnie Jebavy and Steven Duggar.
