Zimmer 'doubtful' for AFL with foot injury

Indians prospect has hairline fracture in right foot, expected to recover
September 23, 2015

Bradley Zimmer was set to carry the results from a promising regular season to the Arizona Fall League, but an injury will likely cut his year short.

Cleveland's top prospect is "doubtful" for the Fall League due to a hairline fracture in his right foot, according to the Indians. The injury is not expected to have any lasting effects as Zimmer "will recover fully," the organization said in a tweet.

Playing in his first full season after being taken 21st overall in the 2014 Draft, the 22-year-old outfielder was a breakout player this summer, especially at Class A Advanced Lynchburg where he started the year. Zimmer hit .308/.403/.493 with 10 homers, three triples, 17 doubles and 32 stolen bases over 78 Carolina League games and was named to the circuit's mid-season All-Star team. He also participated in this year's Futures Game in Cincinnati as the starting center fielder for the U.S. Team.

The University of San Francisco product was promoted to Double-A Akron on July 14 and initially held his own at the Minors' second-highest tier. He hit .250 with a .774 OPS, six homers and 11 steals during his first 42 games in the Eastern League but struggled in September, as young players often do toward the end of their first full seasons, going just 1-for-27 with 12 strikeouts in seven games. The end-of-season slump caused his Double-A slash line to fall to .219/.313/.374.

All the same, MLB.com -- which left Zimmer out of its initial top 100 list of the season -- bumped the left-handed slugger up to the No. 27 spot in its midseason prospect rankings. He was scheduled to join No. 2 Indians prospect Clint Frazier and Twins No. 10 prospect Adam Brett Walker II, among others, in the outfield for the Scottsdale Scorpions.
