Former Keys Abound in Orioles Top 10 Prospect List

Fangraphs List Features Seven Former Frederick Players
December 4, 2015

FREDERICK, Md. -On Thursday, Fangraphs released its list of top 10 Orioles prospects and seven former Frederick Keys were included. Dylan Bundy earned the top ranking, while 15 of the top 23 also possessed Frederick ties. Rankings were based heavily on player tool functionality in game situations.

Besides Bundy, Mychal Givens (No. 4), Chris Lee (No. 5), Chance Sisco (No. 6), David Hess (No. 7), Dariel Alvarez (No. 9) and Trey Mancini (No. 10) were included in the top 10. Hunter Harvey (No. 2), Jomar Reyes (No. 3) and D.J. Stewart (No. 8) rounded out the list.

A former first round pick by the Orioles in 2011, Bundy made just eight regular season starts due to right shoulder calcifications. He also pitched two innings in the Arizona Fall League, but was shut down early due to forearm tightness. In 10 combined starts this season, the Oklahoma native went 2-4 with a 3.60 ERA.

Most of those in the top 10 enjoyed breakout seasons. Givens and Alvarez earned their first Major League call-ups, Lee was recently added to the organization's 40-man roster and Mancini was named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Year as well as a USA Today Minor League Player of the Year finalist.

Mancini, Lee, Sisco, Hess and Mancini played for this year's Keys, with all earning promotions to Double-A. Alvarez was optioned to Frederick from the Orioles in early September due to visa issues. Other former Keys cracking the site's top 23 O's prospect list were Parker Bridwell (No. 11), Mike Yastrzemski (No. 14), Christian Walker (No. 17), Tyler Wilson (No. 18), Jon Keller (No. 19), Oliver Drake (No. 20), Adrian Marin (No. 21) and Tim Berry (No. 22).

Prior to Fangraphs revealing its top 10 Orioles prospects, Sisco, Mancini and Reyes were named among the game's top 100 prospects on Monday. The rankings were based on the KATOH projection system, created by Fangraphs writer Chris Mitchell. Separate from the publication's official top 100 1ist, KATOH utilizes probit regressions to judge factors most predictive of major league performance. The math is then used to forecast the probability of a player's success through age 28. Only individuals with 300 or more plate appearances were considered, while only 2015 statistics were utilized.

The Frederick Keys kickoff their 2016 season on Thursday, April 7 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on the Grand Strand, while the home opener is scheduled for one week later on April 14 at 7:00 p.m against Lynchburg. Ticket plans for 2016 are already on sale, while all plan holders will receive a Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop double bobblehead.
