Cardinals' Weaver to miss a month

Organization's No. 3 prospect suffers left wrist fracture in collision
March 26, 2016

Thomas Boswell wrote a book entitled, "Why Time Begins on Opening Day." That won't be the case again this year for Luke Weaver.

The Cardinals' third-ranked prospect will be sidelined at least a month due to a fractured left wrist, the club announced Saturday.

Weaver, who was assigned to Minor League camp on March 13, was injured after colliding with teammate during a recent workout, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The 22-year-old right-hander appeared in three Grapefruit League games, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts over five innings.

Weaver was expected to open the season at Double-A Springfield. Instead, his non-pitching hand will remain in a cast for three to four weeks. It's the second straight season that the 2014 first-round pick will miss Opening Day after losing six weeks to tightness in his right arm in 2015.

When Weaver got onto the field last season, he excelled, going 8-5 with a 1.62 ERA and 88 strikeouts over 105 1/3 innings in 19 starts for Class A Advanced Palm Beach.

Cardinals top prospect Alex Reyes also miss the start of the season while completing a 50-game suspension for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
