Pitching Posts More Gooseggs, Thunder Defeat 'Ducks 6-1

April 23, 2016

Dan Fiorito and Sebastian Valle each homered and the Thunder pitching staff struck out at least ten batters for the third straight game as the home team took a 6-1 victory from the Akron RubberDucks on Saturday evening at ARM & HAMMER Park. Saturday marked the third straight win for the Thunder and a series victory over Akron.

Fiorito hit his two-run home run in the bottom of the second following a lead-off walk from Dante Bichette Jr. Three batters later, Sebastian Valle struck Akron starter Adam Plutko with a line drive to end the night for the RubberDucks starter after just 43 pitches.

The two runs of support were plenty for LHP Jordan Montgomery who fired six shutout innings and allowed just six baserunners. Montgomery struck out five and earned his second victory of the season. With Montgomery's effort, Thunder starters are 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA (19.2 IP, 2 ER) in the series against Akron. The Thunder pitching staff has struck out 39 RubberDucks in the first three games of the set.

Trenton added to their lead in the fourth when Jake Cave (2-for-4) drove in Valle with a base hit through the left side. The RubberDucks managed an unearned run against Matt Wotherspoon in the eighth to make it 3-1, however, Valle finished off his Thunder debut with a massive three-run home run to left to take a 6-1 lead.

Valle became the first batter since Kyle Roller on April 4, 2013 to hit a home run in his Thunder debut. He finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in.

Wotherspoon lowered his season ERA to 1.38 with two innings of relief. His five strikeouts were a season-high for a Thunder reliever.

SS Tyler Wade extended his on-base streak to begin the season to 16 games with a fourth inning single.

Your Thunder will go for the sweep on Sunday against the RubberDucks on Sunday afternoon at 1pm. RHP Brady Lail will start for the Thunder, LHP Shawn Morimando will go for Akron. The first 1,000 fans, ages five to 15, will receive Kids Pennant's on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
