BayBears Earn First Home Win With 1-0 Shutout

May 5, 2016

MOBILE, AL - It took just one run for the BayBears to earn home win number one. Mobile edged Chattanooga by a final of 1-0 Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The win snapped a 0-7 start to the BayBears' 2016 home schedule.

Mobile (9-15) scored the game's lone run in the first inning. Chattanooga starting RHP DJ Baxendale (1-4) allowed a double to BayBears lead-off man, shortstop Ildemaro Vargas. A sacrifice bunt by Kevin Medrano moved Vargas to third and then he came in to score the only run of the game on a RBI ground out from Chad Oberacker.

The run would be the only blemish on Baxendale's line. The Lookouts righty was saddled with the loss after allowing the one earned run on four hits, walking one and striking out five batters while pitching all eight innings for Chattanooga.

Six Mobile pitchers combined to keep the Lookouts off the scoreboard as the BayBears recorded their second shutout of the season. RHP Charles Brewer made his first start for Mobile since 2014 and shutout the Lookouts on just two hits and striking out five in the game's first four innings before exiting an inning shy of being eligible for the win. RHP Seth Simmons was awarded the win out of the bullpen after working a scoreless fifth inning. RHP Matt Stites closed the door in the ninth frame, retiring the side to earn his second save of the season.

The BayBears continue their five-game homestand against the Chattanooga Lookouts this week with game two scheduled for Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. The homestand runs through Sunday, May 8.
