Astros to promote Bregman, Hernandez

Club's No. 1, No. 24 prospects to join Fresno after TL All-Star Game
June 26, 2016

The Texas League All-Star Game on Tuesday might be the last time Alex Bregman displays his talents in Double-A.

According to MLB.com, Houston's top prospect will be promoted to Triple-A Fresno along with No. 24 Teoscar Hernandez following the midseason classic.

Bregman slashed .297/.415/.559 with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs over 62 games with Double-A Corpus Christi. The 2015 second overall pick stands fourth in the Texas League in batting average. He's also tied for third in homers and fourth in RBIs. Hernandez led the circuit with a .305 average while plating 30 runs.

The timing of Bregman's promotion seems similar to last year's callup of fellow shortstop Carlos Correa. The 22-year-old will be heading for the Grizzlies six weeks later than Correa did. The latter spent less than a month in Triple-A before going on to capture the 2015 American League Rookie of the Year award.

Prior to the All-Star Game, Bregman will take part in the Home Run Derby as a member of the South Division team along with Hooks teammate and Astros' No. 9 prospect Derek Fisher. Bregman last homered on June 16 at Frisco and also had a two-homer game on April 11 against Springfield.

The Louisiana State University product drew 45 walks and struck out 26 times with the Hooks. He amassed three three-hit games this season while collecting four RBIs in two games. Bregman, a right-handed hitter, batted .200 in 30 at-bats against southpaws, but hit .311 in 206 at-bats vs. righties.

Hernandez posted a similar split -- hitting .205 against lefties and .323 vs. righties. The 23-year-old outfielder collected a pair of four-hit games and had a two-homer game on June 15 at Frisco.

The duo will join a Fresno squad that won its first Triple-A National Championship Game last season. The Grizzlies currently stand at 37-38 in the Northern Division of the Pacific Coast League and will begin a four-game series at Salt Lake on Thursday.
