Bregman, White homers enough for Grizzlies

Pair of solo home runs provide Fresno with 2-0 win in series finale
July 17, 2016

Alex Bregman homered in the fourth inning and Tyler White added an insurance run with a ninth-inning blast, providing the Fresno Grizzlies with all the offense they would need in a 2-0 shutout of the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday.

Bregman snapped a scoreless tie by hammering Jeremy Guthrie's first pitch over the fence in left-center field for his sixth home run in 12 games since his promotion to Triple-A.

The former LSU All-American finished 5-for-17 in the series with a double and the home run, which was the only blemish on the afternoon for Zephyrs starter Jeremy Guthrie (6-6). The veteran right-hander limited Fresno to two hits in seven innings with four walks and four strikeouts but had his six-game win streak snapped.

White's home run in the ninth off reliever Nefi Ogando was his third of the series and ninth of the season. In seven career games against New Orleans, White is hitting .486 with five homers and 15 RBI.

Brad Peacock (4-4) sliced through the Zephyrs' lineup, finishing with nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Peacock issued a leadoff walk to Tomas Telis in the eighth inning and with two outs hit Kenny Wilson with a pitch, prompting Fresno to turn to closer James Hoyt, who induced an inning-ending grounder from Robert Andino before retiring the side in order in the ninth for his league-leading 23rd save.

The teams combined for just six hits and split the four-game series.

The Z's continue their homestand on Monday with the opener of a four-game set against the Sacramento River Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
