Shuckers Shutout BayBears 2-0 in Series Opener

July 27, 2016

Mobile, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears had their four-game win streak snapped by the Biloxi Shuckers on Tuesday night. The Shuckers opened the five game series with a 2-0 shutout of the BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium. Despite the loss, Mobile remains in second place, just one game back of the Mississippi Braves in the Southern League South Division.

Mobile (17-14, 49-52) struggled to get anything going against the Shuckers. The BayBears managed just two hits through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, the BayBears loaded the bases with no outs in the inning but failed to drive in any runs.

Biloxi (12-19, 51-49) was led on the mound by RHP Angel Ventura (1-2). The righty allowed just three hits, walking one and strikeout out eight batters in 5.1 innings. Five Shuckers pitchers combined to strike out a total of 12 BayBears batters.

Both of the Shuckers runs scored in the fourth inning. Brett Phillips began the inning with a walk and then two batters later, Dustin DeMuth drove in Phillips to make the score 1-0. The Shuckers lead stretched to 2-0 when with the bases loaded, a run scored from third after former BayBears' utility player, Tom Bela grounded into a double play.

RHP Cole Johnson (0-2) was charged with the loss. The BayBears righty was tagged for both of the Biloxi runs, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out five in seven innings of work.
