Brewers nab Giants' top prospect Bickford

The Brewers acquired Giants No. 1 prospect Phil Bickford and Triple-A catcher Andrew Susac on Monday in a deal that will send lefty reliever Will Smith to San Francisco, according to reports.

Bickford, a 21-year-old right-hander, will head to Milwaukee in the trade-deadline swap that was first reported by Yahoo's Jeff Passan. Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area confirmed the deal later on Monday.

Bickford is the latest No. 1 prospect to get shipped in the past week, following former Cubs top prospect Gleyber Torres and Indians No. 1 Clint Frazier each going to the Yankees. Bickford, the Giants' 2015 first-round pick, is 5-6 with a 2.71 ERA in 17 starts this season for Class A Advanced San Jose and Class A Augusta. He has 105 strikeouts and 27 walks in 93 innings, has tossed a pair of complete games and is holding batters to a .208 average in his first full season.

The 6-foot-4 College of Southern Nevada product was a South Atlantic League All-Star this year before the Giants promoted him June 17.

Susac, 26, was ranked as high as No. 3 among Giants prospects in 2014 but was limited by injuries last year, appearing in 64 games across three levels, including 52 in the Majors. He's played primarily for Triple-A Sacramento this year and is hitting .277 with eight homers, 38 RBIs and a .347 on-base percentage in 61 games across two levels of the Minors.

Smith, 27, was 1-3 with a 3.68 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 22 innings this year with the Brewers. He has two more years of arbitration remaining and fills a hole in the Giants' bullpen following Josh Osich's trip to the disabled list.
