Four score and four hits ago for Gonzalez

Indians' No. 9 prospect knocks three doubles in Clippers' rout of Bats
August 7, 2016

After spending nearly a month in the Majors with the Indians, Erik Gonzalez is back in Triple-A doing the things that got him called up in the first place.

The ninth-ranked Cleveland prospect hit three doubles on a four-hit night, scoring four runs and plating two others to lead Columbus to a 14-5 win over Louisville on Sunday.

"He's done a really good job this year being consistent with his at-bats, both within games and game to game," Clippers manager Chris Tremie said. "He's shown a lot of consistency with his approach and that's been a key to his success this season."

Gonzalez set the tone for the red-hot Clippers offense by leading off the game with a double to left field and coming around to score on a single by Collin Cowgill. In the second, Gonzalez plated Guillermo Quiroz with a single to center before scoring on Giovanny Urshela's three-run homer.

In the fourth, the 24-year-old knocked his second double to center and scored on Cowgill's two-bagger. He wrapped up his production at the plate in the fifth by driving in Joey Butler with a double to right.

"He's done nice work throughout his time here at getting on base. He has the ability to hit for power in the top of lineup," Tremie said. "I think he's going to get better and is probably going to be someone who will hit for good power in his career."

In 84 games for Columbus this season, Gonzalez has batted .301 with six home runs, 25 doubles, and 41 RBIs. He spends most of his team at the top of the Clippers lineup, because he combines hitting skill with speed on the basepaths.

"He's shown to be a good baserunner and he does a pretty good job of reading pitchers," Tremie said. "He can go first to third and easily score from second on most base hits. He does a really good job of setting the table for the other guys."

Gonzalez made his Major League debut on July 16 against Minnesota. In 10 games for Cleveland, the Dominican Republic native went 1-for-9 and scored twice.

"He really enjoyed his experience with the Indians," Tremie added. "Like any other player, he wants to contribute to a big league club and help them win games."

Cowgill collected three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs, while Urshela added The first three batters in the lineup -- Gonzalez, Cowgill and Urshela -- accounted for nine RBIs.

Columbus starting pitcher Ryan Merritt (8-7) allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out nine in eight innings.

Reds' No. 7 prospect Rookie Davis made his Triple-A debut in the second, allowing nine runs on 10 hits over four frames. Rehabbing Major Leaguer Alfredo Simon (0-1) gave up a run on three hits with one strikeout in the first.
