Two Comebacks Not Enough; Blaze Drop Finale, 10-9

Wawoe drives in 5 runs in defeat
August 19, 2016

In a high-scoring, see-saw affair, the Bakersfield Blaze showed tremendous mettle, twice coming back from three runs (or more) down to tie the game at nine runs apiece, but the San Jose Giants plated the game's final run and escaped with the finale of the homestand, 10-9, at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Throwback Thursday.

The ballgame was nothing if not interesting right from the outset. After two quick innings without a score, the Giants plated three in the 3rd on a pair of homers, and one more in the 4th on a RBI groundout for a 4-0 lead.

The Blaze came storming back for the first of two remarkable comebacks, batting around in the 4th to knock Giants starter Conner Menez from the game. Gianfranco Wawoe provided the big swing in the inning with a bases-clearing double. In all, Bako scored six times for a 6-4 lead.

But the Giants roared right back. After a key wild pitch on strike three granted San Jose a bonus out, back-to-back homers pushed the Giants back in front, 8-6 and knocked Blaze starter Eddie Campbell from the game.

San Jose added one more unearned run in the next inning off Kody Kerski for a 9-6 edge.

But Bako evened the scales once more, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 6th, with Wawoe once again plating a pair as part of his 5-RBI night.

The Giants had the last laugh, though. After Thyago Vieira worked two scoreless innings, T.J. Bennett greeted Joe Pistorese (L, 1-1) with a solo homer, his second dinger of the game, pushing San Jose in front, 10-9.

And Reyes Moronta (S, 12) finished it off.

Pat Young (W, 6-1) got the win, pitching the 7th and 8th and keeping the Blaze at bay.

The Blaze now embark on a short road trip to Stockton. Dave Gascon will have the radio broadcast on all three games. Listen live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio, and make sure to check the schedule for game times.
