Aiken Dominate as Scrappers Top Spikes

 (Niles, OH)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers were able to climb back to within a game of the .500 mark on Monday night at Eastwood Field. Brady Aiken held the State College Spikes in check for five innings while picking up his second win of the season in a 4-2 win.  

The Spikes would grab the early lead with a run in top of the first inning before Aiken would settle in. Tommy Edman doubled to start the game for the third straight game. He would come in to score on a Vince Jackson RBI single.

In the bottom of the first the Scrappers would take the lead right back. Gabriel Mejia singled to start the inning and then stole second. He would score on an RBI single from Andrew Calica. Calica would also steal second and then score the go ahead run on a Gavin Collins RBI double for a 2-1 lead.

The Scrappers added a run in the third inning on another Collins RBI hit. This time an infield single would score Silento Sayles who had walked to start the inning.

The final run of the game for the Scrappers would come in the fifth inning. Jorma Rodriguez doubled to left to drive in Sayles who had once again walked to start the inning.

Aiken (2-0) earned the win with 5.0 innings of work. He allowed just one earned run while scattering three hits. Aiken walked one and matched a season high with six strikeouts. Henry Martinez would follow with 2.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on three hits. Martinez struck out one. Kenny Mathews (1) earned the save in 2.0 innings of relief. He did not allow a hit, run or a walk. Mathews struck out two.

With their 30th win coming in the 61st game of the season, it's the quickest the Scrappers have reached 30 wins since 2011.

The Scrappers (30-31) now head to Brooklyn, NY for a three game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Ballpark starting Tuesday night at 7:05. Shane Bieber will get the start for the Scrappers. The team returns home to Eastwood Field on Friday August 26th.
