August 27, 2016

MODESTO, Calif. - The JetHawks went up against a dominant Ryan Castellani in the series opener against the Modesto Nuts and fell, 4-2, on Friday night at John Thurman Field.

Castellani (7-8) faced the minimum through seven innings en route to the series opening victory. He ended up allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Trent Woodward ended the Nuts' shutout bid with a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning, his sixth Cal League homer of the season. Woodward had been responsible for the only other JetHawks hit to that point, a double in the second inning.

The Nuts (54-77) got on the board in the first inning against Elieser Hernandez (2-5). Forrest Wall singled with one out, and Hernandez hit a batter and walked a batter to load the bases. Dom Nunez followed with a two-run double.

Modesto added two more against Hernandez in the fourth inning. Drew Weeks led off the frame with a double and, after a one out walk, Luis Jean drove home both runners with a double to the left field wall.

Hernandez lasted five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters.

Andrew Thome followed Hernandez with three scoreless innings of relief to keep the JetHawks in the game.

Lancaster (72-59) inched closer once the Nuts moved into their bullpen. Marc Magliaro entered the game with one out in the eighth inning and surrendered a double to Aaron Mizell. Mizell moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jason Martin fly ball.

The JetHawks put two runners on in the ninth inning against Troy Neiman but couldn't come up with a run. Neiman picked up his second save.

The three-game series continues Saturday night in Modesto. Lancaster will send Albert Abreu (1-0) to the mound against Colin Welmon (1-4). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
