Red-hot De Leon heading to The Show

Dodgers No. 2 prospect to make Major League debut on Sunday
September 2, 2016

Julio Urias got all the hype, but it's Jose De Leon's time to shine.

The Dodgers' second-ranked prospect will be promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start against the Padres on Sunday in Los Angeles.

De Leon, MLB.com's No. 35 overall prospect, had been on schedule to fill a spot in the big league rotation a few times this season with the the Dodgers battling injuries. He'll get the opportunity to prove he's ready over the season's final month.

"I haven't seen a lot, but I know he's got a very good fastball, he's got a plus change and he's got a breaking ball to go along with his mix," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told MLB.com. "What I do know about Jose is he's a great young man, he's a hard worker and he's got a lot of character. And he's from Puerto Rico. I'm anxious to learn a little bit more about him."

The 24-year-old right-hander has made 16 Pacific Coast League starts this season, going 7-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 111 strikeouts against 20 walks over 86 1/3 innings. He allowed more than three earned runs just once and was in the midst of his best stretch of the year.

Since surrendering seven runs over 1 1/3 innings against New Orleans on July 25, De Leon is 4-0 with a 1.30 ERA in six starts. He went at least seven innings five times during that stretch as the Dodgers built his pitch count as high as 109 after not letting him top 88 in his first six starts.

Over his last three outings, the 2013 24th-round pick had a 0.83 ERA, 33 strikeouts and no walks over 21 2/3 innings, bringing his opponents' batting average for the season under .200 for the first time since the Zephyrs knocked him around at the end of July.
