NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers knocked off Lowell 4-2 in the series finale on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium. Ryan Castellanos earned his eighth win of the year, passing Austin Pritcher (2011) for most wins in a single-season with the Connecticut Tigers.
The right-hander pitched a season-high seven innings for the Tigers, allowing six hits, one run and coaxed the Spinners into two double plays.
The Tigers were able to give Castellanos enough offense with four runs on seven hits. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Tigers scored a run without the benefit of a hit. After two walks to lead off the inning, back-to-back fielder's choices led to a run for Connecticut. Danny Woodrow grounded a ball to third basemen Andy Perez, Perez fired an off-balance throw home and was unable to get Hunter Swilling at home.
The Tigers took the lead for good in the fifth inning, Cole Bauml stroked an RBI single into left field, giving Connecticut a 2-1 lead. The Tigers added two more in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 4-1. With the infield drawn in, Austin Athmann chopped an RBI double over the head of Perez down the left field line to plate Danny Pinero. Will Savage shortly followed with an RBI single into right field.
Bryan Garcia came in for the ninth inning and collected his team-leading sixth save of the summer. The win was the 40th victory for Connecticut this season, the second most in a single-season. The win was also the 24th at Dodd Stadium, tying the single-season record set in 2014.
