Woodbridge, VA---Past & present Potomac Nationals will represent the Washington Nationals in the Arizona Fall League come October. Current players RHP Ryan Brinley and SS Osvaldo Abreu will join a quartet of former P-Nats in Arizona. RHP Austin Voth and LHP Nick Lee, both members of the 2014 Potomac squad, will accompany two members of the 2016 P-Nats Opening Day Roster, as 3B Drew Ward and CF Andrew Stevenson will make it six Washington prospects on the initial roster for the Glendale Desert Dogs.
Brinley, a mid-season and post-season All-Star in the Carolina League, will make his first appearance in the AFL. The right-handed reliever has been Potomac's primary closer in 2016 and is third in the Carolina League with 15 saves. Brinley is 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA in 30 appearances for Potomac this season. A 27th round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, Brinley has also appeared for Double-A Harrisburg this season.
The current shortstop for Potomac, Abreu is also slated to debut in the AFL. Currently the 19th ranked prospect in the Washington system according to MLB.com, Abreu has hit .244 with six home runs in 123 games for the P-Nats in 2016. Abreu has two different 12-game on-base streaks for Potomac this season and has one of Potomac's two grand slams in 2016.
Stevenson, the Washington's second round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, started the 2016 campaign with Potomac and garnered a mid-season All-Star start. Stevenson won the MVP in the Carolina League vs. California League All-Star game and was promoted to Harrisburg shortly thereafter. Ranked as the #8 prospect in the Nationals' system by MLB.com, Stevenson is the highest ranked member of the system scheduled to play in the AFL. The centerfielder hit .304 with 21 extra base hits and 18 RBIs in 68 games for Potomac this season.
Like Stevenson, Ward also started 2016 with Potomac and earned an All-Star nod and promotion to Harrisburg. The third baseman is currently the 10th ranked prospect in Washington's system according to MLB.com. Ward played in the AFL in 2015 and took the experience into the 2016 season, where he has 14 home runs between the P-Nats and Senators. Ward hit 11 home runs and had 32 RBIs in 64 games for Potomac this year. A third round pick from the 2013 MLB draft played in 12 games for the Salt River Rafters in the AFL in 2015.
A member of the 2014 Potomac squad, Voth made six starts for the P-Nats. The right-handed starter went 2-1 with a 1.43 ERA, as he struck out 40 and walked just seven over 37.2 innings. The ninth ranked prospect in Washington's system according to MLB.com has spent the season with Triple-A Syracuse. With the Chiefs, Voth has 126 strikeouts and 54 walks with a 3.59 ERA over 150.1 innings.
Lee, who pitched for Potomac as a starter in 2014 and out of the bullpen in 2015, returns to the AFL much like Ward. The lefty has spent all of 2016 with Harrisburg. With the Senators, Lee is 3-1 with a 4.38 ERA in 44 games out of the bullpen. Lee made six bullpen appearances for Salt River in 2015.
21 of MLB.com's top 100 prospects are currently slated to play in the Arizona Fall League, including five of the top 100 who played in the Carolina League in 2016. Joining the six Nationals prospects on the Glendale roster will be prospects from the Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, and St. Louis Cardinals. In it's 25th season, the AFL gets underway on October 11th and runs through November 19th.
