Torres, Voth win weekly Fall League awards

Yankees No. 2 prospect, Nationals righty build on dominant stretches
November 15, 2016

Gleyber Torres has done plenty to leave his mark on this year's iteration of the Arizona Fall League. Now he's got two awards to show for it.

The Yankees' No. 2 prospect has been named the AFL Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Tuesday. Nationals No. 9 prospect Austin Voth took home pitching honors in what will be the league's final weekly awards of 2016.

Torres led all Fall League batters in hits (nine), average (.600), OBP (.647) and OPS (1.447) over his four games for Scottsdale last week, adding in a triple, double, three RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases. His standout game came last Tuesday when the 19-year-old middle infielder went 3-for-4 with a triple, double, walk, two RBIs and a run scored from the No. 3 spot in the lineup during a 13-3 win over Glendale.

MLB.com's No. 17 overall prospect, Torres is entering his first offseason in the Yankees system after coming over from the Cubs in a deadline deal involving Aroldis Chapman and, despite his youth, has become one of the leading candidates for the AFL's MVP award. Entering Tuesday, the Dominican Republic native leads the league with a .379 average and sits second with a 1.121 OPS. He's collected seven extra-base hits (including three homers) and four stolen bases. In 72 plate appearances, he has walked 14 times and struck out on only seven occasions. He also won the AFL Player of the Week award back on Oct. 25.

Mostly a shortstop in the Minors, Torres has split time between short and second base during his time with the Scorpions in an attempt to increase his versatility.

On the pitching side, Voth nabbed his award with an impressive start last Wednesday in Glendale's 10-0 win over Salt River. The 24-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and struck out three without walking a batter over five innings -- his second straight scoreless outing of the same length.

Voth struggled early on with the Desert Dogs, posting a 10.43 ERA over his first four starts (14 2/3 innings), but has seen that stat drop to 6.20 with 10 straight scoreless frames. He has struck out 20 and walked four while giving up four homers in 24 2/3 innings in the Fall League.

The 2013 fifth-rounder is coming off a relatively full year at Triple-A Syracuse, where he owned a 3.15 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 133 strikeouts and 57 walks in 157 innings.
