EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett AquaSox visited Safeco Field for the 37th Annual Seattle Mariners Pre-Spring Training Luncheon. The luncheon provided insight from key positions within the Seattle Mariners organization relating to FanFest, player health, player development and an overall look on the off-season with Spring Training just weeks away.
Director of Player Development Andy McKay shared his insight on the players in the Mariners organization, "Every player we have is a prospect, every single one of them. Maybe someone like Tyler (O'Neill) might get more publicity that's fine and that's the way the world works but every player we have has a chance to play in the Major Leagues and (can) help us win a baseball game and we coach them all that way"
Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto spoke about a candid conversation he had in 2015, "'I felt that the core (of the team) was great but it required a few tweaks.' So here we are 35 trades and 100+ players later and I think the tweaks put us in a pretty good position. We experienced a 10 game improvement over the 2015 (season) obviously a 2nd place finish with 86 wins means you're the first loser. We're not particularly excited about a repeat performance, we'd like to get better." With the athletic upgrades the Mariners made this off-season the AquaSox fans can look forward to seeing more talent at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Manager Scott Servais learned a lot over his first season as manager but is excited about the talent brought in this off-season based off last season's building relationships, "162 is a lot of games. When you're living and dying in it every day I realized the value of being patient with the guys and not overreacting at times. Over the way I earned the players' trust and showing faith in those guys."
Highlights from the day included multiple speakers presenting at the luncheon on Thursday including Senior Director of Baseball Information Tim Hevly, Director of Publication Information Rebecca Hale, Assistant Athletic Trainer Rob Nodine, Director of Player Development Andy McKay, Vice President & Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operation Jeff Kingston, Director of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto, Manager Scott Servais, Left-Handed Pitcher James Paxton and recently acquired Outfielder Mitch Haniger.
