Red Raiders football to scrimmage on March 25, baseball hosts New Mexico State on April 18
02/09/2017 2:00 PM ET

The RockHounds, in conjunction with Texas Tech University, are pleased to announce that the Red Raider football and baseball teams will make appearances this spring at the Scharbauer Sports Complex.

Texas Tech will hold a spring football open scrimmage at Grande Communications Stadium on Saturday, March 25 and the Red Raiders baseball team will face the New Mexico State University Aggies on Tuesday, April 18, at Security Bank Ballpark.

The March 25 scrimmage marks the fifth consecutive year in which the Red Raiders will have made an appearance at Grande Communications Stadium as part of the team's official spring schedule. Coach Kliff Kingsbury's squad will take the field at 1:00 p.m., with gates opening at noon (see right).

Again this season, there is no admission charge for the Red Raiders football scrimmage.

Texas Tech held intrasquad scrimmages/practices at Grande Communications Stadium in 2013, 2014 and again last season. In 2015, with Jones AT&T Stadium undergoing construction, the facility served as host for the Red Raiders' official 2015 Spring Game, drawing more than 7,000 fans to the Scharbauer Sports Complex.

Fans will again be encouraged to tailgate in the stadium's parking areas, and the event will also feature a kids' play area, photo opportunities with the Texas Tech mascot and additional entertainment (to be announced at a later date), hosted by the Midland Convention and Visitors' Bureau.

The April 18 matchup between Texas Tech and New Mexico State will mark the fourth consecutive year in which the Red Raiders will have played at Security Bank Ballpark, continuing a relationship that dates back to the 1990's at Christensen Stadium (the former home of the Midland Angels and RockHounds).

"Our partnership with Texas Tech University has been outstanding and is really a perfect match," said RockHounds general manager Monty Hoppel. "Tech has such a strong and loyal fan base in the Permian Basin and we have two first class facilities (Security Bank Ballpark and Grande Communications Stadium) in which to host the teams. The Red Raider visits have really become a tradition and we're pleased to continue it in 2017."

Coach Kliff Kingsbury's team finished 2016 with a 5-7 record, defeating the Baylor Bears, 54-35 in the season finale. The Red Raiders open their 2017 campaign with a pair of home games, hosting Eastern Washington University on September 2 and the Arizona State Sun Devils coming to Lubbock on September 16.

Under head coach Tim Tadlock in 2016, the Red Raiders baseball team made its second-ever trip to the College World Series, finishing with a 47-20 record and a top ten national ranking. Tech captured the (four-team) regional in College Station before defeating East Carolina in Lubbock, two-games-to-one, to advance to Omaha for the second time in school history (both in the last three seasons, the previous appearance in 2014).

The Red Raiders, who open their 2017 season on February 17, enter the year ranked in the top 25 of virtually every collegiate baseball poll and are third in the Big 12 preseason rankings. Tech will face New Mexico State University in the April 18 contest at Security Bank Ballpark. The Aggies, under coach Brian Green, are coming off a tremendous year, one in which they improved by 23 wins over the 2015 season. NM State finished 34-23 (20-7 in the WAC).

Both Texas Tech appearances are presented by ProPetro Services

Dale Redman, ProPetro's CEO, was a three-year letterman (1981-84) with the Red Raiders baseball team. He was also the 2015 winner of the Scott Seator Community Achievement Award, presented annually by the RockHounds for contributions to our community through sports. Dale's sons, Hunter and Reid, attended Tech and both went on to careers in professional baseball.
