The Arizona Diamondbacks, parent club of the Reno Aces, made six roster moves today, including optioning 2017 top prospects left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda and right-handed pitcher Jimmie Sherfy to Reno.
Banda, 23, made his triple-A debut in June of last season and proved to be an asset to the Aces staff, earning himself Arizona Diamondbacks' Pitcher of the Year and a bid in the 2016 Futures' game. The southpaw was originally selected by Milwaukee in the 10th round (335th overall) of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of San Jacinto (Texas) College and acquired by Arizona with former Aces' outfielder Mitch Haniger from the Brewers in exchange for outfielder Gerardo Parra on July 31, 2014. Banda enters the 2017 season rated as Arizona's No. 1 prospect by both Baseball America and MLB.com, as well as 88th on Baseball America's preseason Top 100 Prospect list.
Sherfy, 25, enters his fifth season in the Diamondbacks organization and spent 2016 across three levels (Visalia, Mobile, Reno). The right-hander was second in saves for the Aces, converting 12 of 15 opportunities in 23.1 innings. He was selected by Arizona in the 10th round (300th overall) of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Oregon. Entering the 2017 season, Baseball America rated Sherfy as Arizona's No. 13 prospect.
Additional transactions included optioning infielder Dawel Lugo to Double-A Jackson, who is rated by Baseball America as Diamondbacks' No. 2 prospect, and reassigning pitchers Frank Duncan, Daniel Gibson and Jared Miller to Minor League camp.
With just less than three weeks to go in Spring Training, the D-backs have 53 players left at camp.
The Aces open their 2017 season on Thursday, April 6 at 7:05 p.m. against the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park. The home opener is set for Tuesday, April 11 at 6:35 p.m. against the Albuquerque Isotopes at Greater Nevada Field.
