KINGSPORT, Tenn.- Thanks to a three-run home run from Jeremy Vasquez and a five-run sixth inning, the Kingsport Mets snapped the Greeneville Astros' seven-game winning streak Sunday afternoon at Hunter Wright Stadium with a 11-2 victory in Game 3 of the series.
The win Sunday afternoon also snapped a seven-game losing streak inside the not-s-friendly confines of Hunter Wright Stadium. With the victory, the Mets improve to 4-1 when scoring more than 10 runs in a game.
Prior to the contest, fans had the opportunity to attend a tailgate party under the Mets Pavilion that featured live acoustic music from Billy Bryant with numerous giveaways. The party witnessed fans playing corn hole while sampling the many variations of drinks from Gipsy Cider and The Beer Run of Kingsport.
Once the contest finally got rolling, the home crowd was able to see Kingsport (6-10) take an early lead when Victor Moscote singled in Juan Uriarte with an opposite-field hit to right in the bottom of the first inning. The 1-0 early lead was the first time all series the K-Mets jumped out first to begin a ballgame.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Kingsport starting pitcher Jose Geraldo (2-1) experienced his only trouble on the day in the top of the third. In the frame, Gilberto Celestino and Adrian Tovalin record back-to-back RBI singles to lead 2-1 midway through the third. The two runs in the third inning were the only blemish on the scoreboard for the visitors by game's end, however.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the third, Vasquez launched his second professional home run to hand the Mets the lead back at 4-2. With two men on base and one out on the board, Vasquez connected on an 0-1 fastball and drove it over the right-center field fence.
From there, Greeneville (12-5) never retook the lead as the home team scored at least one run in the next three innings the rest of the way.
Wagner Lagrange drove in the fifth run of the day with an RBI single in the fourth while Uriarte doubled down the left field line in the fifth to bring in Vasquez from first base. The one-scoring innings set the table for a monster, five-run frame for the Mets in the sixth.
Every K-Met made a trip to the plate during the five-run, three-hit sixth inning as Lagrange's two-run double kicked things off. Uriarte then followed three batters later with his second double of the day. The drive drove in another pair while the fifth run of the frame scored on a two-base throwing error.
Following the sixth inning, no runs crossed home plate as the Kingsport Mets held on to defeat the Greeneville Astros 11-2 in Game 3 of a four-game series. Both William Oxford and Stephen Villines came in to finish the game for the K-Mets as the duo combined to pitch the final four innings of shutout baseball with a combined five strikeouts.
Geraldo picke dup his second victory of the season with the five-inning, two-run effort while Bryan Abreu (0-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs off four hits in only 3 1/3 innings of work. Adam Bleday and Ian Hardman finished the game on the mound for the Astros as the duo combined for 4 2/3 innings of six-run baseball.
Four K-Mets tallied multi-hit days while Fermin scraped across three hits in the win. Vasquez tallied the long ball during the victory but Uriarte doubled twice to drive in three while Lagrange plated three runs as well. Moscote also notched two hits with an RBI in the victory.
Offensively for the Astros who were held in check for only two runs off eight hits, Cody Bohanek and Tovalin collected multi-hit days.
The four-game series is set to conclude Monday night at 6:30 p.m. from Hunter Wright Stadium. Coverage of the contest can be found on the Kingsport Mets Baseball Network beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the Braeden's Barbeque Pregame Show.
