The Nashville Sounds hit four solo home runs on Friday night and held off a furious ninth-inning rally to claim the opener of a four-game set from the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 7-5.
Franklin Barreto took 'Cakes starter William Cuevas deep over the center field on the game's first pitch, and Ryan Lavarnway led off the third with a home run to double the lead to 2-0.
One out later, Cuevas hit Barreto with a pitch and was ejected by home plate umpire Clay Park. After arguing, 'Cakes manager Arnie Beyeler and pitching coach Scott Budner were also ejected.
The Sounds manufactured a run in the fifth against Brandon Cunniff. Former Zephyr Mark Canha reached on a grounder up the middle, raced to third on Yairo Munoz's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt McBride.
Chad Pinder greeted Kyle Lobstein with an opposite field home run to lead off the sixth, and Munoz tucked a towering drive inside the left field foul pole an inning later.
Nashville tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, capitalizing on four wild pitches by Tayron Guerrero, who was making his New Orleans debut. The four wild pitches tied a single-game franchise record.
The lone Baby Cakes tally against Sounds starter Chris Jensen was an unearned run in the sixth after Mike Aviles led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Moisés Sierra.
Making only his fourth start of the year, Jensen (5-1) scattered six hits in six innings to earn the victory.
Tomás Telis delivered a two-out double with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to bring in two runs, and Sierra followed with a two-run single up the middle. Tucker Healy then walked Brian Anderson to put the potential tying run on base, forcing the Sounds to turn to Patrick Schuster, who fanned pinch hitter Brandon Barnes to end the game.
Cuevas (1-3) lost his third straight start and the Baby Cakes dropped their sixth in a row.
The series continues on Saturday at 6 p.m.
