Thunder Split Series In Altoona With Extra-Inning Defeat

August 13, 2017

[Empty Body]

ALTOONA, PA -- Zack Zehner hit a grand slam home run, but, it wasn't enough as the Thunder fell 5-4 in ten innings on Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field on Sunday night.
Trailing 3-0, the Thunder used three straight singles in the fifth inning to load the bases with two out. Zehner then sent a 2-0 offering over the wall in left field for his second grand slam of the season and the seventh of the season for the Thunder. Seven grand slams extends a franchise record for the Thunder and Zehner has eclipsed double-digit home runs for the first time in his professional career.
Daniel Camarena was in line for the victory after 5.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk. Andrew Schwaab and Cody Carroll kept Altoona off the board until the ninth as they combined for 2.1 innings pitched.
In the bottom of the ninth, Altoona got a leadoff single from pinch-hitter Jin-De Jhang and after Cole Tucker was hit by a pitch; the Curve bunted both runners into scoring position. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Cale Coshow induced a ground ball off the bat of Jerrick Suiter, however, Trenton wasn't able to turn a double play and the tying run crossed home.
Altoona wasted no time in the tenth inning as Michael Suchy doubled off the wall in center to leadoff the inning. Elvis Escobar, who had a walk-off hit in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, turned the trick again on Sunday when he grounded a single back through the middle, scoring Suchy and earning a 5-4 win for the Curve.
With the Thunder loss and a Reading defeat, the Thunder's magic number to clinch a playoff spot stands at five.
Thairo Estrada led a 15-hit game for the Thunder offense with a four-hit night at the plate.
Your Thunder continue return to ARM & HAMMER Park on Tuesday night to play a three-game set with the Akron Rubberducks. RHP Will Carter will throw for the Thunder and will be opposed by RHP Shane Bieber for the 'Ducks. Tuesday is Steiner Sports Night with a special appearance by former Major Leaguer and current ESPN Analyst, Aaron Boone! Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
