JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Appalachian League announced Monday that Johnson City Cardinals RHP Evan Guillory has been named the circuit's Pitcher of the Week for the time period between August 7-13. This is the 21-year-old's first award of his professional career.
In his lone start during the week - on Tuesday night vs. Kingsport - Guillory dominated, allowing just two hits over a career-high seven shutout innings. The Jennings, La. native walked just one batter and struck out a career-best eight en route to his second victory of the season. During the week, Guillory was third in the league in batting average against (.087), tied for third in WHIP (0.43) and tied for sixth in strikeouts (8).
Guillory is the second Cardinal player to receive a weekly honor this year. 1B Luis Bandes has earned the circuit's Player of the Week honors twice this season (July 10-16 and July 31-August 6). The right-hander is the first Johnson City pitcher to garner a weekly award since RHP Jhonatan Escudero received the honor for the time period of August 18-24 of 2015. The Redbirds have not had weekly award winners in consecutive weeks since RHP Tyler Herron (August 7-13) and RHP Blake King (August 14-20) received Pitcher of the Week back-to-back times in 2006.
Since being inserted into the starting rotation on July 24, Guillory has posted a 2-1 record with a pristine 0.00 ERA (0 ER in 17.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts in three starts. Overall this season, the 21-year-old has a 2-1 mark and a 2.87 ERA (10 ER in 31.1 IP) in 13 appearances (three starts) for the Cardinals. Guillory was drafted by St. Louis in the 23rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Single-game tickets are still available and can be purchased online at JCCardinals.com or by calling the Cardinals' Ticket Office at (423) 461-4866.
