Pitching Stifles Doubledays

Williamsport, PA -- Williamsport spun a pair of shutouts against the Auburn Doubledays, sweeping the twinbill, ending their five game losing streak in the process.

Williamsport, PA -- Williamsport spun a pair of shutouts against the Auburn Doubledays, sweeping the twinbill, ending their five game losing streak in the process.

Andrew Brown was terrific in his start in game one, bouncing back from a tough start at Auburn his last time out.
Brown worked around a pair of base hits in the top of the 1st inning, and did not allow much more the rest of the way, finishing the night throwing six shutout innings. The right-hander scattered four hits while allowing a pair of walks and striking out five as he picked up his third win of the season.
Jackson Tetrault matched Brown, tossing four shutout innings for the Auburn Doubledays, allowing a pair of hits while walking one and striking out three Cutters batters. Tetrault would not factor in the decision.
Williamsport's bats came to life in the bottom of the 6th inning against Doubledays reliever Alex Troop.
Greg Pickett broke the scoreless tie, plating Josh Stephen with a RBI single through the left side of the infield, giving the Cutters a 1-0 lead. It was the 19th RBI of the season for Pickett.
Yahir Gurrola padded the Cutters lead with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Jhailyn Ortiz from 3rd base to give the Cutters a 2-0 advantage. It was 6th RBI of the season for Gurrola, who was playing in his eighth game for Williamsport.
Luis Ramirez slammed the door on the Doubledays, tossing a scoreless 7th inning to earn his New York-Penn League leading ninth save of the season.
In game two, Spencer Howard picked up where Brown and Ramirez left off, keeping the Douobledays bats silent through a career-high five innings of work
Howard did not allow a run, surrendering just one hit, walking two and striking out six Auburn batters. Howard, like Brown, was coming off of a tough start at Auburn, earned his first professional win.
Cole Stobbe, gave the Crosscutters the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, launching a solo home run into the Doubledays bullpen in left field, giving Williamsport a 1-0 edge. The home run was the 8th of the season for Stobbe, moving him into a tie for first in the New York-Penn League. It was his 21st RBI of the season, which ranks 3rd on the club.
Three batters later, Malvin Matos padded the Cutters lead with a line drive two-run home run to left field, scoring Nerluis Martinez to give Williamsport a 3-0 advantage. The home run was the 3rd of the season for Matos, who now has 17 RBI on the season.
Randy Alcantara pitched the final two innings, not allowing a run as he surrendered just one hit and struck out two. The save was Alcantara's fourth of the season in as many chances.
Williamsport will go for the series sweep tomorrow evening against the Auburn Doubledays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Cutter Carvings - The wins were the first two of the season for Williamsport in doubleheaders, improving to 2-8 in doubleheaders... The Crosscutters have now tossed three shutouts this season, with these being the first back-to-back shutouts of the year... Williamsport is now 17-11 when scoring first... Yahir Gurrola was hit by a pitch in game two, making it 51 times this season the Cutters have been plunked. The team record is 54 in a season...
