Hicks highlights nine Spikes on Opening Day rosters

Jordan Hicks, who pitched for the State College Spikes in 2016, is the latest Spikes alum to make it to his destination on the Road to the Show, presented by HRI, Inc Hicks is now the 50th former Spike to make it to the major leagues as he leads a list of nine Spikes on Opening Day rosters in 2018.

A native of Houston, TX, Hicks was a supplemental third-round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015, and made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals in June 2016. The right-hander then joined the Spikes on July 31, 2016, and sparkled on the hill for the 2016 New York-Penn League champions. Hicks went 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA over six starts and totaled 22 strikeouts in 30 2/3 regular season innings. He then got the nod for Game 2 of the NYPL Semifinal Series, but did not factor in the decision after allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings.
After throwing for Single-A Peoria and Advanced-A Palm Beach in 2017, Hicks then wowed observers in the spring and earned a spot on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster. The 21-year-old wasted no time making an impression, throwing a scoreless, one-hit seventh inning and striking out Jay Bruce in his MLB debut on Opening Day.
The Spikes are most well-represented on the 2018 Opening Day roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates, with infielder Jordy Mercer (2008) and outfielder Josh Bell (2011) joining pitchers Jameson Taillon (2010), Tyler Glasnow (2012) and Dovydas Neverauskas (2012) for the Bucs.
Spikes alums on mounds across the rest of the majors include All-Star Tony Watson (2007) of the Giants, Luis Perdomo (2013) of the Padres, and Adam Ottavino (2006) of the Rockies.
Rounding out the ranks of Spikes in the majors to start the season are infielder Gift Ngoepe (2010) of the Blue Jays, who was the first player from the African continent ever to reach the big leagues, and All-Star utilityman Brock Holt (2009) of the Red Sox.
In addition, two former Spikes will begin the season on major league disabled lists. 2006 Spikes pitcher Luke Gregerson will begin his time with the Cardinals on the 10-day DL, while 2011 Spikes first baseman and outfielder Alex Dickerson will be on the Padres' 60-day DL after undergoing elbow surgery.
Fans can see more future major league stars begin their Road to the Show, presented by HRI, Inc., when the Spikes hit the field for 39 nights of fun, affordable family entertainment. The New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, August 14 will serve as the centerpiece of a home schedule that starts with the Home Opener on Saturday, June 16 and runs through Friday, August 31.
